Chapter 3 - The Alliance in the BoothThe pasta grew cold on the white ceramic plates, congealing into an untasted mass. Neither Mara nor Nathan touched their food. The cozy, awkward atmosphere of a first blind date had evaporated into ash, replaced by the heavy, electric tension of a conspiracy born in the dark.

"My help?" Mara echoed, her voice trembling slightly as she instinctively pulled Josie closer to her chest. "Nathan, what are you talking about? I’m a pediatric nurse. I deal with fevers, broken bones, and frightened parents. I don't wage corporate warfare or hunt down white-collar criminals."
"You don't have to hunt him down," Nathan said softly, his intensity never wavering. "He’s coming back to Ashford Hills."
Mara felt the room tilt. "Back? Why would he come back here? He cleared out everything. He knows the authorities are technically bound by the settlement agreement, but if he sets foot in this state—"
"He thinks the statute of limitations on your civil filings expired last week," Nathan interrupted, pulling a sleek black tablet from his leather satchel. He slid it across the table. The screen illuminated a high-resolution corporate filing stamped by the state registry. "Grant’s new father-in-law, Arthur Sterling, is bankrolling a massive luxury hotel and condo complex right on the edge of the historic district. Guess who Sterling hired as the lead development partner under a corporate front name?"
Mara stared at the screen. The name G. H. Vance stared back at her.
"Vance?" she whispered.
"His middle name is Vance," Nathan explained grimly. "He thinks he’s reinvented himself. He thinks he’s untouchable because he traded you and a three-year-old child for a billionaire's portfolio. But the land he’s building on—the historic carriage houses slated for demolition next month—belonged to a trust that was illegally seized twenty years ago. And I have the paper trail."
Mara looked from the tablet to Nathan’s face. The lines around his eyes weren't just signs of exhaustion; they were the topography of a man who had spent years plotting vengeance.
"Why tell me this?" Mara asked, her voice tight with suspicion. "If you have the evidence, why not hand it to the federal prosecutor or the state attorney general? Why involve a tired nurse with a sleeping toddler?"
Nathan leaned back, his broad shoulders tensing beneath his jacket.
"Because the authorities move too slowly, and Sterling’s legal team buys judges like they’re buying coffee," Nathan said flatly. "To stop the demolition, we need an insider with legal standing to contest the property title. Because your name was still legally attached to the assets Grant drained during your common-law marriage period—thanks to a loophole in your state's joint-property laws—you still hold a vested interest claim on that land."
Mara stared at him, her mind racing. "I... I could block the permits?"
"You can freeze the entire project for six months," Nathan said. "Which is just enough time for Sterling’s investors to pull out, bankrupting Grant and exposing every single fraudulent asset he used to climb into high society."
"And what do you get out of this?" Mara challenged, narrowing her eyes. "Justice? Or is this about Vanessa—the fiancée who cheated on you?"
Nathan went completely still. The air between them grew sub-zero. For three long seconds, he didn't blink.
"Vanessa was Arthur Sterling’s daughter," Nathan said quietly.
Mara’s breath caught in her throat.
"She didn't just cheat on me with some random guy," Nathan continued, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper. "She did it under her father’s orders to steal my architectural patents, bankrupt my firm, and drive me to the brink of ruin so Sterling could buy my life’s work for pennies on the dollar. Grant Halloway didn't just marry a rich woman, Mara. He married into the exact same syndicate that tried to destroy me."
Nathan reached out, his warm fingers brushing against the back of her hand where it gripped the edge of the table.
"We share the same enemy," Nathan whispered. "And tonight, fate didn't put us at this table by accident. Claire didn't set this up. My sister is an interior designer working on Sterling's new hotel. She found out Grant was coming to Ashford Hills, she found out who he was, and she called me. Then she called your sister."
Mara looked down at Josie, who let out a soft sigh, her tiny chest rising and falling against Mara’s heart. The illusion of safety she had built over the last two years—the quiet, humble life of working double shifts and hiding from the wreckage—shattered completely.

She looked back up at Nathan Cole.
"When do we start?" she asked.
