CHAPTER 4 – THE SAFE THAT HELD THE TRUTH

Rosa didn't sleep.
She couldn't.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the same frozen frame from Luciana's phone.
Captain Esteban Cruz.
The man trusted to protect the De la Vega family.
The man who had carried Mateo into the mansion after the boy was found.
The man who saluted Alejandro every morning.
He had been driving the black SUV that chased Luciana.
The realization changed everything.
This wasn't simply a family secret anymore.
It was a carefully planned conspiracy.
And the people involved had unlimited money...
Unlimited power...
And no hesitation about killing.
At sunrise, Rosa quietly copied the video onto an old memory card she had hidden inside the lining of her apron.
The phone itself was too dangerous to carry everywhere.
If someone found it...
Everything would be over.
As she finished hiding the card, someone knocked gently on her door.
It was Alejandro.
He looked exhausted.
"I hope I'm not interrupting."
Rosa shook her head.
"No, sir."
He smiled sadly.
"You've done more for Mateo than anyone realizes."
"He's sleeping again."
"He laughs again."
"I haven't seen him smile since his mother died."
The words struck Rosa deeply.
Alejandro still believed Luciana's death had been an accident.
He was living inside a lie.
"I wish I could repay you properly," he continued.
"Today my lawyers are coming."
"I'm finalizing Mateo's inheritance."
"If anything ever happens to me..."
"Everything I own will belong to my son."
Rosa felt a chill.
Valeria's conversation echoed in her mind.
Once Alejandro signs tomorrow's inheritance documents...
So this was the reason.
Money.
Control.
Everything pointed toward Mateo becoming the target.
Before leaving, Alejandro hesitated.
"There is something strange."
Rosa looked up.
"The night Mateo disappeared..."
"My security cameras failed."
"Every single one."
"For exactly forty-three minutes."
"I've never understood why."
Rosa almost told him the truth.
Almost.
But she stopped herself.
If Captain Esteban controlled security...
Who else inside the mansion could be trusted?
That afternoon, Emilio secretly led Rosa through the oldest section of the estate.
Hidden behind abandoned horse stables stood a tiny stone chapel covered with ivy.
"I haven't been here in years," Emilio whispered.
He pushed aside an old wooden altar.
Behind it was a narrow staircase descending underground.
Cold air rushed upward.
Rosa switched on a flashlight.
"What is this place?"
"A wine cellar."
"Built more than a hundred years ago."
"But Luciana used it for something else."
They descended carefully.
Dust covered every bottle.
Spiderwebs stretched across the ceiling.
Then Rosa noticed a small steel safe hidden behind stacked wooden crates.
The safe door was already slightly open.
Inside...
There was no money.
No jewelry.
Only a brown envelope.
Across the front, written in elegant handwriting, were six chilling words.
If I disappear, trust Rosa.
Rosa's knees nearly gave way.
"How..."
Emilio stared in disbelief.
"She didn't know you."
"No..."
Rosa whispered.
"She couldn't have."
Inside the envelope were several documents.
Property records.
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
And a handwritten letter.
The first sentence made Rosa's heart stop.
Alejandro... if you're reading this, I am probably already dead.
She turned the page with trembling hands.
Luciana explained everything.
For months she had been investigating millions of pesos disappearing from Alejandro's companies.
The money had been transferred through fake charities...
Then moved into secret offshore accounts.
The signatures authorizing the transfers appeared to belong to Alejandro.
But they were forged.
Luciana had uncovered the truth.
The fraud was being orchestrated by Ricardo.
Valeria.
And someone inside Alejandro's executive security team.
She had gathered enough evidence to expose them.
Then...
She wrote one final sentence.
They said Mateo must disappear before the inheritance is changed.
Rosa felt sick.
The kidnapping hadn't been random.
It had been planned long before.
Mateo wasn't merely lost in the forest.
Someone had intended for him never to come back.
Suddenly...
A loud metallic slam echoed through the cellar.
The heavy entrance door above them had closed.
Emilio looked toward the staircase.
"We're not alone."
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Coming down.
One...
Two...
Three people.
Flashlights swept across the darkness.
A familiar voice laughed softly.
"I knew eventually you'd find the safe."
Valeria.
She stood halfway down the stairs.
Beside her was Ricardo.
Behind them...
Captain Esteban held a pistol fitted with a silencer.
Valeria smiled almost kindly.
"You really should have accepted the housekeeper's job..."
"...and stopped asking questions."
Rosa instinctively stepped in front of Emilio.
"What do you want?"
Valeria tilted her head.
"The phone."
"The letter."
"The memory card."
"And after that..."
She looked directly at Rosa.
"...there will be no witnesses."
Captain Esteban raised the pistol.
The cellar fell completely silent.
Then—
A child's voice echoed from the top of the staircase.
"DADDY!"
Everyone looked up.
Standing in the doorway...
Holding Alejandro's hand...
Was little Mateo.
And the expression on Alejandro's face changed the instant he saw the gun pointed at Rosa.
He wasn't confused anymore.
He wasn't grieving anymore.
For the first time since Luciana died...
He understood that the enemy had been living inside his own home.
