CHAPTER 5 – THE BETRAYAL THAT DESTROYED THE DE LA VEGA EMPIRE

"Daddy!"

Mateo's frightened voice echoed through the underground cellar.

For one long second...

No one moved.

Captain Esteban still aimed the silenced pistol at Rosa.

Valeria's confident smile slowly disappeared.

Ricardo's face turned pale.

Alejandro stood at the top of the stone staircase, gripping Mateo's small hand so tightly the boy winced.

His eyes never left the gun.

Then they shifted...

To Valeria.

To Ricardo.

To Captain Esteban.

One by one.

The pieces finally fit together.

"So..."

Alejandro said quietly.

"It was never an accident."

Nobody answered.

The silence itself became a confession.

Valeria was the first to recover.

She smiled as if nothing had happened.

"Alejandro, you're misunderstanding everything."

"You always were too emotional."

She slowly walked down the stairs with graceful confidence.

"The security captain was only protecting us."

"The widow stole private family property."

"The gardener helped her."

"And now they've invented a ridiculous story."

Ricardo immediately nodded.

"We called security because they broke into the cellar."

Alejandro didn't move.

Instead, he looked toward Rosa.

"Did you?"

Rosa slowly held out the brown envelope.

"I found what your wife wanted you to see."

Alejandro stared at Luciana's handwriting.

His hands began to shake before he even opened the letter.

He recognized her writing instantly.

The elegant curves.

The small heart she always drew above the letter "i."

He unfolded the first page.

The cellar became completely silent.

Only the sound of paper turning echoed against the stone walls.

His eyes moved faster.

Then slower.

Then stopped.

His breathing became uneven.

He turned another page.

Then another.

Finally...

He reached the last sentence.

"If they fail to kill me... they will try to kill our son."

Alejandro closed his eyes.

A single tear rolled down his face.

"No..."

he whispered.

"Luciana..."

When he looked up again...

The gentle businessman everyone admired was gone.

Standing in his place was a father who had just learned his family had been betrayed from within.

He looked directly at Captain Esteban.

"Lower your weapon."

Esteban didn't move.

Alejandro repeated the order.

This time louder.

"I said..."

"LOWER YOUR WEAPON."

Instead...

Captain Esteban aimed directly at Alejandro.

Everything happened in less than three seconds.

Mateo screamed.

Valeria stepped backward.

Ricardo reached inside his jacket.

Then—

BANG!

The gun fired.

Rosa instinctively threw herself toward Mateo.

Alejandro pulled his son behind him.

The bullet struck the stone wall, sending fragments flying through the cellar.

Before Esteban could fire again...

An unexpected voice thundered from above.

"DROP THE GUN!"

More than twenty armed officers flooded down the staircase.

Federal investigators.

Financial crimes agents.

State police.

Captain Esteban froze.

Ricardo's face drained of color.

Valeria whispered,

"No..."

One officer tackled Esteban to the ground.

Another handcuffed Ricardo.

A third seized Valeria before she could run.

Alejandro stared in disbelief.

"What's happening?"

The lead investigator removed his badge.

"We've been building a corruption case against Ricardo Mendoza for fourteen months."

"We followed the money."

"But we couldn't identify everyone involved."

He looked toward Rosa.

"Until someone activated Luciana's old phone."

Rosa blinked.

"What?"

"The phone automatically synchronized with a hidden cloud account the moment it connected to the internet."

"Our cybercrime unit received the alert."

"Luciana anticipated this."

"She created a dead-man's trigger."

Everyone stood speechless.

Even Emilio smiled through tears.

Luciana had planned for the truth to survive...

Even if she didn't.

The investigators began opening boxes hidden inside the cellar.

Each one contained documents.

Hard drives.

Financial records.

Cash.

Fake passports.

Offshore banking information.

Enough evidence to expose a criminal empire worth hundreds of millions of pesos.

Ricardo looked at Valeria.

"You promised she destroyed everything."

Valeria laughed bitterly.

"No."

"I promised I'd try."

Alejandro slowly turned toward his sister-in-law.

"Why?"

His voice was barely audible.

"You already had money."

"You already had everything."

Valeria's expression hardened.

"No."

"I had your leftovers."

"The companies."

"The respect."

"The family."

"The life that should have been mine."

She pointed toward Mateo.

"And then he was born."

"Once he became your heir..."

"I became invisible."

Alejandro closed his eyes.

"So you murdered my wife..."

"And tried to murder my son..."

"For an inheritance?"

Valeria smiled without remorse.

"For everything."

Silence filled the cellar.

Even the officers seemed disturbed.

As Valeria was escorted away in handcuffs...

She suddenly stopped.

Turned toward Rosa.

And smiled.

"You think you've won."

"You haven't."

Rosa frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Valeria laughed quietly.

"I wasn't the one who ordered Luciana's death."

The entire cellar froze.

Alejandro stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

Valeria leaned close enough that only they could hear her final words.

"The person who paid for the murder..."

"...is someone you still trust."

She walked away without saying another word.

Alejandro stood motionless.

Rosa felt her heart sink.

Because Valeria wasn't bluffing.

Among the evidence scattered across the cellar floor...

One unopened envelope remained.

Across the front...

Luciana had written only one sentence.

"Do not open this until Valeria is arrested."

With trembling hands...

Alejandro broke the seal.

Inside was a single photograph.

He looked at it.

His face instantly turned white.

The envelope slipped from his fingers.

Rosa picked it up.

The moment she saw the picture...

The air left her lungs.

Standing beside Luciana's murderer...

Smiling directly at the camera...

Was someone they had never suspected.

Someone the entire family loved.

Someone who had attended Luciana's funeral...

Comforted Alejandro...

And hugged little Mateo afterward.
