Chapter 5 - The Legal BladeThe red and blue lights of dozens of law enforcement vehicles reflected off the bulletproof glass of the penthouse windows, turning the opulent living room into a flashing chamber of sirens.

"They have the perimeter sealed," Marco reported, monitoring the security feeds on his tactical tablet. "Three federal tactical units in the lobby. Snipers on the surrounding rooftops. The Special Agent in Charge is demanding you step out with your hands up, Don Moretti."
Alessandro stood near the fireplace, calmly swirling his scotch. He didn't look like a man facing a life sentence in a maximum-security federal prison. He looked like an grandmaster contemplating his next chess move.
"Arthur Romano’s final revenge," Alessandro mused quietly. "If he couldn't beat me with bullets, he would burn down the whole city using the federal government as his match."
"Alessandro, you have to run!" I cried, stepping between him and the window as if my body could block the federal snipers outside. "There must be a helicopter, a secret exit—"
"Running makes me look guilty, Clara," Alessandro said smoothly, placing his empty glass on the mantelpiece. "And a Moretti does not run from federal prosecutors who buy their suits off the rack."
He turned to Marco. "Open the private elevator. Let Special Agent Vance come up alone."
"Boss, that's risky—"
"Do it," Alessandro commanded.
Two minutes later, the private elevator chimed. The doors slid open to reveal a tall, sharp-featured man in a tailored dark coat, flanked by two heavily armed federal agents holding assault rifles. Special Agent Harrison Vance had spent the last decade trying to dismantle the Moretti syndicate, and the triumph in his cold grey eyes was palpable.
"Alessandro Moretti," Vance said, stepping onto the plush carpet, his voice dripping with authority. "It’s over. We have Arthur Romano’s master ledgers. We have thirty years of wiretaps, offshore accounts, and execution orders. You're going away for the rest of your life."
Alessandro didn't even look at the handcuffs Vance pulled from his belt. "Agent Vance. You've been chasing my family since you were a junior agent in Brooklyn. Tell me, did you read the fine print on those ledgers before you rushed over here with your sirens blaring?"
Vance scoffed. "I don't need to read every line. The evidence of racketeering is absolute."
"Then you missed the most important detail," Alessandro said, walking slowly toward the agent. The two tactical guards raised their rifles, but Alessandro ignored them completely. "Those ledgers don't belong to the Moretti family. They belong to the Romano Foundation—a charitable organization registered under the names of Senator Arthur Romano and his daughter, Vivien."
Vance’s smile faltered slightly. "The money flowed into Moretti accounts!"
"The money was stolen from Moretti accounts," I spoke up suddenly, my voice ringing clear and strong across the room.
Vance turned his sharp gaze toward me, noticing my maid’s uniform for the first time. "Who are you? The housekeeping isn't supposed to be here."
"She is Clara Moretti," Alessandro announced, his voice echoing with absolute pride. "The surviving heir of Don Matteo Moretti, who was kidnapped as a child by Arthur Romano to extort our family's assets."
Alessandro reached into his jacket, pulled out a thick stack of certified legal documents, and tossed them onto the table in front of Vance.
"Those are the original land deeds and bank transfers from 2002," Alessandro explained calmly. "They prove that every dollar Arthur Romano claimed was 'Moretti racketeering' was actually extortion money laundered through his political action committees. My family wasn't running an illegal empire, Vance. We were paying a twenty-four-year ransom for my kidnapped sister."
Vance’s face went completely pale. He dropped his gaze to the documents on the table, his fingers trembling slightly as he flipped through the forensic accounting records.
"This... this flips the entire jurisdiction," Vance whispered, the triumph in his eyes shattering into absolute terror. "If Romano was using state funds and federal land to hide a kidnapped child of a major political donor..."
"Then the United States government was complicit in the human trafficking and extortion of an American family for over two decades," Alessandro finished smoothly. "And you, Agent Vance, just arrested the victim instead of the perpetrator."
Outside, the sirens continued to wail, but inside the penthouse, the silence was absolute.
Vance swallowed hard, turning to his two agents. "Lower your weapons," he ordered quietly.
He looked back at Alessandro, his jaw tight. "This doesn't make you a saint, Moretti."
"No," Alessandro agreed, stepping closer to Vance, his dark eyes burning with lethal intelligence. "It makes me the man who owns the federal prosecutor's office. Now, take your men, go to the federal holding facility, and arrest Vivien Romano for corporate fraud and accessory to kidnapping."
Vance stared at Alessandro for five long seconds, realizing he had been completely outplayed. Without another word, he turned on his heel and stepped back into the elevator, his guards following close behind.
As the elevator doors closed, I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for hours. "Is it really over?"
Alessandro turned to me, his expression softening as he looked at me and then toward the hallway where Emma was sleeping.
"The government is handled," Alessandro said. "But there is still one person left who thinks she can destroy us from the inside."

He looked at Marco. "Where is Vivien Romano right now?"
"She posted bail ten minutes ago using a hidden offshore account," Marco replied grimly. "And our intelligence indicates she just hired the Russian syndicate to hit this building."
