Chapter 7 - The Blood on the MarbleThe recoil of the heavy pistol slammed through my wrists, sending a shockwave up my arms, but I didn't drop the weapon.

The heavy bullet caught the mercenary in the shoulder, spinning him around with a grunt of pain. He dropped his assault rifle, crashing hard onto the hardwood floor. His night-vision goggles knocked askew, he looked up in absolute shock to see a woman in a stained maid's uniform standing over him, her arms raised, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated fury.

"Stay away from my daughter," I snarled.

He reached for a combat knife at his vest, but before he could draw it, I pulled the trigger a second time. The shot echoed through the hallway, and the mercenary went completely limp.

Behind me, the intense firefight reached its brutal conclusion. Alessandro had used the distraction I provided to flank the remaining three attackers. Four rapid gunshots rang out in quick succession, followed by the heavy thuds of bodies hitting the floor.

Silence returned to the penthouse, thick and heavy, punctuated only by the sound of rain pouring through the shattered skylight and the harsh sound of our breathing.

Alessandro stepped over the fallen men, his pistol lowered, his dark eyes wide as he looked at me. A slow, proud smile spread across his blood-splattered face.

"You really are my sister," he said softly.

Before I could answer, a loud, maniacal laugh echoed from the shattered skylight above.

We both looked up. Standing on the narrow iron catwalk of the roof structure, drenched in the freezing rain and holding a detonator in her hand, was Vivien Romano.

Her elegant blood-red gown was torn and soaked, her black hair plastered to her face, her eyes wild with complete insanity. She looked like a demon resurrected from the depths of hell.

"You think you won, Alessandro?!" Vivien screamed over the roaring wind and rain. "You think you can take my life, my family, my money, and give it to this... this trash?!"

She pointed the detonator down at us.

"There are ten pounds of C4 strapped to the structural columns of this penthouse!" Vivien shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. "If I press this button, the entire top floor collapses into the street! We all die together!"

"Vivien, stop!" I shouted, stepping forward, keeping my gun aimed up at her. "Your fight is with us! Don't do this! My daughter is in that room!"

"I don't care about your bastard child!" Vivien roared, tears mixing with the rain on her face. "You took everything from me! I was supposed to be the queen of New York! I was supposed to wear the Romano diamond! And you... you cleaned my toilets!"

Alessandro stepped calmly in front of me, placing himself directly in her line of sight. He didn't raise his gun. He simply looked up at her with profound, icy contempt.

"Press it then," Alessandro said softly.

Vivien blinked, startled by his complete lack of fear. "What?!"

"Press the button, Vivien," Alessandro repeated, his voice carrying over the storm with terrifying composure. "Do it. Show everyone that in the end, you were nothing more than a coward who couldn't survive losing."

"I'm not a coward!" she screamed, her thumb hovering over the red detonator switch. "I'm a Romano!"

"No," Alessandro said, taking a step toward the iron catwalk stairs. "Your father was a traitor. Your brother was an idiot. And you are just a spoiled child throwing a tantrum because the real owners of this city came back to take what is ours."

Vivien’s hand trembled violently. The cold reality of what she was about to do seemed to finally breach her delusional mind. She looked down at the sheer drop beneath the shattered skylight, then at Alessandro advancing up the stairs toward her, calm, unbothered, lethal.

"You... you're a monster," she whispered, her voice faltering.

"I am a Moretti," Alessandro corrected smoothly. "And this is my house."

In a split second of hesitation, Vivien looked down at the detonator. That fraction of a second was all Alessandro needed.

He raised his arm with blinding speed and fired a single shot.

The bullet struck the detonator in Vivien's hand, shattering the plastic device into pieces. The force knocked her backward. She slipped on the wet, rain-slicked iron edge of the catwalk, her hands clawing wildly at the air as she lost her balance.

With a high-pitched scream that was cut short by the howling wind, Vivien Romano fell through the open skylight, crashing past the catwalk and plunging down into the dark abyss of the elevator shaft below.

The penthouse was silent once more.

Alessandro walked back down the catwalk stairs, his face unreadable. He walked over to me, took the heavy pistol gently from my trembling hands, and engaged the safety.

"It's over, Clara," he said softly, putting his arm around my shoulders. "The Romano family is gone."

The blast shield on the nursery door slid open with a soft hydraulic hiss. Marco stepped out, holding Emma in his arms. My daughter rubbed her eyes, clutching her gray plush rabbit tight, looking completely unharmed and blissfully unaware of the war that had just ended outside her room.

"Mommy?" Emma called out, her soft voice breaking through the heavy darkness of the room. "Is the loud noise gone?"

I broke down into tears, rushing over and pulling my little girl into my arms, pressing my face into her soft curls. "Yes, baby," I sobbed, holding her as tight as I could. "The noise is gone. We're safe."

Alessandro walked over, standing beside us. He looked down at Emma, then reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box he had retrieved from his private vault.

He opened it to reveal a stunning gold chain holding a tiny, intricate pendant—a silver serpent coiled around a small dagger, identical to the crest stitched inside Emma's stuffed rabbit.

He gently placed the necklace around my daughter's neck.

"Welcome to the family, little princess," Alessandro whispered.
