Chapter 1 - THE MARK OF DISLOYALTY

The silence in Villa Moretti didn’t just grow heavy; it turned lethal.

Alessandro’s thumb traced the rough black stitching hidden beneath the velvet inner fold of the blue rabbit’s ear. It wasn't an ordinary craft flaw. It was a crest—a stylized serpent coiled around an inverted dagger. The mark of the Vipera, an ancient, forgotten faction of the Milanese underworld that had attempted a bloody coup against the Moretti bloodline fifteen years ago.

Every Don in the room recognized it instantly. A collective intake of breath echoed off the gilded walls.

"I asked a question," Alessandro repeated, his voice dropping into a register so dangerously calm that two guards near the doorway visibly tensed. "Where did your daughter get this toy, Clara?"

I pulled Emma back into my hip, wrapping my arms defensively around her tiny frame. My chest heaved with terror. "It... it was a gift. From her father before he passed away two years ago."

Alessandro stood up, all six-foot-three of him casting a shadow over us. His piercing gray eyes locked onto mine. "Your husband, David Bennett. He was an accountant for the municipal shipping docks, correct?"

"Yes," I stammered, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"David Bennett didn't die in a car accident, Clara," Alessandro said softly, turning to face the room of twelve crime families. "He was executed. Because he found out who was smuggling unregistered arms through Port 4 using my seal." He paused, letting the revelation sink into the room. "And this mark... this mark belongs to the traitor who ordered his death."

A murmur rippled through the grand hall. Vivian’s face drained of what little color she had left. "Alessandro, this is absurd! You’re taking the word of a common maid and a child's filthy toy over the dignity of our engagement?"

"Silence, Vivian," Don Ricci barked from his table, his aged hand trembling slightly over his glass. "If the Vipera crest is inside this house, none of us are safe."

Alessandro slowly walked toward the head of the banquet table. He pulled a heavy silver revolver from inside his tailored jacket and set it quietly beside his plate.

"The person who marked this rabbit gave it to David Bennett as a warning—or a tracking device," Alessandro said, scanning the faces of the twelve bosses. "And whoever killed David left his widow destitute, forcing her into my home where they could keep eyes on her. Which means..."

He stopped behind Vivian’s father, Don Mateo Romano.

"Which means the snake isn't outside our walls," Alessandro whispered. "It's sitting at my table."

Before Don Mateo could react, Alessandro grabbed him by the collar and slammed his head onto the mahogany table. Glass shattered. Women screamed. Weapons cleared holsters instantly across the room, thirty armed men pointing barrels at one another in a standoff that could ignite a war in milliseconds.

"Search the Romano estate," Alessandro roared to his right-hand man, Marco. "And lock every exit of this villa. No one leaves until I find out why my fiancée's family has my late uncle's crest in their possession."

Vivian dropped to her knees, weeping hysterically, but her eyes weren't filled with fear—they were filled with pure, venomous rage aimed straight at me.

CHAPTER 1 HOOK: As Marco led Mateo away in chains, my phone vibrated in my apron pocket. It was a text from an unknown, restricted number: “You shouldn’t have brought the rabbit, Clara. Now Alessandro knows who really killed your husband... and why Emma is the true heir to the Moretti fortune.”
