Chapter 2 - THE BLOODLINE SECRET

The text message burned through my vision. Emma? An heir to the Moretti empire? My mind reeled as I clutched my daughter tighter. David was a quiet, modest accountant. He had no mafia blood. Or did he?

Within twenty minutes, Villa Moretti was under absolute lockdown. Heavy iron shutters descended over the stained-glass windows, sealing the twelve families inside a luxury prison. Armed guards stood every two feet along the perimeter.

Alessandro retreated into his private study on the second floor, summoning me and Emma immediately.

The study smelled of aged leather, expensive bourbon, and ozone. Alessandro sat behind a massive oak desk, staring intently at the blue rabbit, which now sat under a high-powered desk lamp. Marco was dissecting the plush toy with a scalpel.

"Mommy, why is the nice man cutting Mr. Bunny?" Emma whined softly, hiding her face in my neck.

"He's just... helping Mr. Bunny, sweetie," I lied, my voice shaking.

"Clara, sit," Alessandro commanded, pointing to a leather armchair.

I sat down, bracing myself. "Mr. Moretti, I don't know anything about mafia symbols or traitors. I just clean houses. Please, let us go."

"You aren't leaving, Clara. Not tonight, and perhaps not ever," Alessandro said, pulling a magnifying glass away from the toy. Marco pulled a tiny micro-chip embedded inside the rabbit's stuffing, along with a folded piece of encrypted paper.

Alessandro unfolded the paper carefully. His eyes widened slightly—the only sign of emotion he had shown all night.

"Your husband wasn't named David Bennett," Alessandro said slowly, looking up at me. "His real name was Davide Moretti. My older brother. The one who disappeared ten years ago after refusing to take over the syndicate."

The room spun. I felt cold sweat break out across my forehead. "No... no, that’s impossible. David didn't have family. He was an orphan!"

"He staged his disappearance to escape this life," Alessandro explained, his voice softening just a fraction. "He changed his name, lived like a civilian, and married you. But my uncle’s loyalists—the Vipera faction—found him. They knew that if I died without an heir, the leadership would pass to Davide's bloodline."

He looked directly at Emma.

"Your daughter isn't just a maid's child, Clara," Alessandro said solemnly. "She is the direct blood heir to the entire Moretti syndicate. And Vivian Romano didn't strike you because of spilt juice. She knew who you were the moment you walked through those doors."

Before I could process the massive revelation, the alarms across the villa began to blare in a terrifying, rhythmic pulse. The lights flickered and plunged the study into complete darkness.

Shouts echoed from the hallway outside, followed immediately by the rapid, deafening chack-chack-chack of automatic gunfire.

"They're inside!" Marco yelled, drawing his weapon.

Alessandro sprang over the desk, grabbing me by the arm and pulling Emma into his chest just as the heavy oak doors of the study were blown off their hinges by a breaching charge.

CHAPTER 2 HOOK: As smoke filled the room, a shadowed figure stepped through the ruin of the doorway, holding a silenced pistol. Through the haze, the moonlight caught the person's face. It wasn't Vivian's father—it was Vivian herself, stripped of her gown, wearing tactical gear, and smiling like a demon.
