Chapter 7 - THE GALA OF THE ILLUSIONS

Three weeks later, the annual Founders’ Charity Gala was held at the Grand Meridian Hotel—the crown jewel of the Sterling Group’s hospitality portfolio.

Every powerful figure in the city was in attendance. Julian Sterling himself stood near the grand staircase, accepting handshakes and congratulations on his impending appointment to the city’s economic development chair.

When the double doors swung open, the murmurs didn't just rise—they stopped dead.

I walked down the grand staircase on Veyron’s arm. I wore a backless midnight-blue velvet gown that swept the floor like liquid starlight, accessorized with the heavy diamond necklace Veyron had sent me on our wedding day. My hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, and my expression was completely serene, untouchable, and sovereign.

Julian Sterling’s smile faltered. His glass froze halfway to his mouth.

He had expected Veyron to attend alone—or worse, not attend at all, crippled by the sudden regulatory investigations hitting his peripheral holdings. Instead, Veyron walked in with the woman whose family trust had just been cleared, restructured, and merged directly into Santoro Holdings.

“Veyron,” Julian forced a tight, brittle smile as we approached the center of the ballroom, holding out a hand. “I didn’t expect to see you here tonight. Especially after such a... turbulent month in the local courts.”

Veyron didn't take Julian’s hand. He simply slid his arm a fraction tighter around my waist, his dark eyes fixed on Julian with absolute contempt.

“You should know by now, Julian, that I never miss a celebration,” Veyron replied smoothly. “Especially when the trash has been cleared out and the foundation is finally secure.”

Julian’s eyes flicked nervously toward me. “Mrs. Santoro... I was so sorry to hear about your family’s legal troubles. Quite a tragedy with your mother and sister.”

I smiled—a cold, polished smile that didn't reach my eyes.

“Thank you for your concern, Mr. Sterling,” I replied, my voice carrying clearly across the quieted room. “Though I’ve learned that sometimes, a fire is the only way to clean out an infested house. Speaking of fires... I understand federal regulators are currently auditing the Sterling Group’s secondary accounts for unauthorized proxy transactions involving Veritas Group.”

Julian’s face went completely bloodless. The glass in his hand trembled violently against his signet ring.

“I... I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Julian stammered, taking a panicked step backward.

“Oh, I think you do,” I said softly, stepping closer, letting the diamond necklace catch the overhead spotlight. “Marcus Vance sends his regards. He’s currently presenting your financial ledger to the district attorney’s grand jury downstairs.”

Before Julian could answer, two federal marshals in plain clothes stepped out from behind the velvet drapes, flanking him on either side.

“Julian Sterling,” the lead agent announced quietly, holding out a warrant. “You’re coming with us.”
