Chapter 1 - The Descent into Darkness

The interior of the MTA bus spun into a nauseating kaleidoscope of red taillights, glaring fluorescent bulbs, and terrified faces. Claire’s vision tunneled as another vicious wave of contractions ripped through her abdomen, tearing a raw, breathless sob from her throat. She was sinking sideways onto the rubber-matted floor, her soaked coat offering zero protection against the freezing draft sweeping through the doors.

"Call an ambulance! Someone call 911 right now!" a frantic voice screamed—it might have been the woman across the aisle, or perhaps the driver, who had slammed on the brakes, throwing the bus into a violent skid across the wet asphalt of the Williamsburg Bridge.

Claire curled into a tight, desperate ball, her hands fiercely shielding her twenty-eight-week belly. The cold realization that she was entirely alone, broke, and actively delivering triplets on a public transit bus felt like a nightmare she couldn't wake from. Ethan’s parting words—“You’ll land somewhere, Claire. You always do”—echoed mockingly in her ears. No. She wasn't going to land; she was going to shatter.

"Hang on, miss, help is coming!" the driver yelled, vaulting over his partition with a cell phone pressed to his ear. But Claire knew the ambulance wouldn't make it through the gridlocked bridge traffic in time. The babies were coming now. Darkness crept at the edges of her sight, swallowing the shouting passengers, the rain, and the flashing sirens of distant cars, until everything faded into absolute, terrifying blackness.
