Chapter 1 - The Knock on the Door

The rain tapped a frantic rhythm against the glass of Marissa’s cramped, dimly lit kitchen, but the storm outside was nothing compared to the tempest raging inside Adrian Whitmore’s mind. Standing just beyond the rotting wooden doorframe of her apartment, hidden by the heavy shadows of the crumbling stairwell, the millionaire tried to steady his breathing. His expensive wool coat was soaked through, but he didn’t care. His eyes were entirely fixed on the scene unfolding a few feet away.
The family attorney, an aging, silver-haired man named Arthur Vance, stood stiffly in the center of the threadbare room. Vance’s presence here—in this forgotten corner of South Boston—was completely absurd. Arthur Vance only handled trust funds, corporate mergers, and the multi-million-dollar real estate acquisitions of the Whitmore empire. He did not make house calls to struggling housekeepers.
Marissa’s hands trembled as she clutched a frayed, dog-eared blue envelope. Her elderly mother sat hunched at the tiny laminate table, clutching a crying infant who was desperately rooting for a bottle that had been empty for hours.
"You shouldn’t have come here, Arthur," Marissa whispered, her voice cracking with a mixture of terror and exhaustion. "I told you I’d handle the debt. I just... I needed a little more time."

"Time is the one commodity the estate no longer possesses, Marissa," Vance replied, his voice chillingly devoid of emotion. "Your late husband signed the binding arbitration agreement voluntarily. Every month you fail to make the indemnity payment, the interest compounds. Whitmore Infrastructure cannot afford the PR disaster of a rogue leak—especially not right now."
Adrian’s heart slammed against his ribs. Late husband? Indemnity payment? For four years, the name of Marissa’s husband—and the reason for his sudden, tragic erasure from every family ledger—had been a locked vault. Now, standing in the damp hallway, Adrian realized the vault was about to be blown wide open.
