Chapter 1 - The Eviction & The Silent AssetArthur pulled into the driveway late that afternoon, the engine of his BMW humming with smug satisfaction. Beside him, Brooke was scrolling through luxury decor sites, picking out gold-framed mirrors for her salon.

"She’ll be back," Brooke scoffed, adjusting her sunglasses. "She has nowhere else to go. By tonight, she’ll be on her knees giving you that bank card just to sleep in the guest room."
Arthur smirked, grabbing his briefcase. "She needs to learn her place. I've been too soft on her."
When Arthur pushed open the front door, the house was eerily silent. The scent of stale coffee hung heavy in the air.
He walked into the kitchen, expecting to find me weeping on the couch or nursing her wounds in bed. Instead, the kitchen was spotless—except for two things sitting on the island table.
My platinum wedding band, resting directly next to the dried, brown stain of the spilled coffee.
And next to the ring lay a thick, yellow envelope addressed to Arthur Vance.
Brooke walked in, snapping her fingers. "Where is she? Is dinner not even made?"
Arthur ignored her, his eyebrows knitting together as he pulled out the contents of the envelope. It wasn't a tearful love letter. It was a formal legal notice served by Caldwell & Associates.
NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE EVICTION AND SEIZURE OF PROPERTY. Be advised that the residential property located at 1428 Elmwood Heights is registered solely under the corporate entity Vance Holdings LLC, of which Clara Vance (née Vance) holds 100% equity. You have 60 minutes to vacate the premises before law enforcement executes a trespass warrant.
Arthur’s face drained of color. "What... what is this?"
"What does it say?" Brooke demanded, snatching the paper. "Eviction? Is she crazy? You bought this house!"
"I... I paid the mortgage," Arthur stammered, his hands beginning to shake.
What Arthur had never checked—because his ego never allowed him to look at the master deeds—was that when we got married, I had quietly bought out the original mortgage through my father's holding firm. Arthur had been paying "rent" to a management firm for six years, believing he was paying off a joint mortgage. Every single monthly payment he made had been routed directly into an escrow account registered to my name.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed on the porch.
Two uniformed officers stepped through the doorway, accompanied by a sharp-suited woman holding a leather portfolio. Victoria Caldwell.
"Arthur Vance?" Victoria asked coolly, taking in the dried coffee stain on the table. "I suggest you grab your personal clothes. The locks are being changed in fifteen minutes."
"You can't do this! This is my house!" Arthur roared, stepping toward Victoria.
The officers immediately stepped forward, hands resting on their holsters. "Sir, step back. The deed is clear, and there is an active emergency protective order filed against you for domestic assault."
Brooke gasped. "Assault? She threw herself backward! It was an accident!"
Victoria smiled—a cold, razor-thin smile. "The emergency room photographs, forensic thermal imagery of her second-degree burns, and the coffee grounds embedded in her skin say otherwise, Miss Vance. And as for you..." Victoria turned her gaze to Brooke. "...the fraud division of the State Attorney’s Office would like a word regarding the forty-thousand-dollar wire transfers from Vance Holdings."

Arthur looked at the ring on the table. For the first time in eight years, the arrogant, controlling mask slipped. Realization hit him like an icy wave.
I hadn't just left him. I had systematically dismantled his entire life before he even realized he was at war.
