Chapter 1 - The Reborn Queen

My mother’s hand squeezed my wrist so hard her manicured nails nearly bit into my skin, but I didn't wince. I simply looked at her—really looked at her—and saw the panic breaking through her carefully painted mask.

"Evelyn, have you lost your mind?" she hissed under her breath, her eyes darting toward the open ballroom doors where music still floated lazily through the air. "Nikolai Moretti? Do you have any idea what people say about him? You are embarrassing this family!"

"You already destroyed this family’s reputation the moment you let Julian hand Serena my ring," I said, my voice unnervingly calm. I pulled my wrist from her grip with a slow, deliberate movement. "You asked me not to embarrass you, Mother. But I’m not your sacrificial lamb anymore."

Before she could speak, Nikolai stepped into the corridor. He didn't touch me inappropriately, nor did he make a dramatic display of possession. He simply stood beside me, his towering presence instantly casting a long shadow over my mother. The sheer aura of authority surrounding him made the hallway feel colder, tighter, and infinitely more dangerous.

"Mrs. Hart," Nikolai said smoothly, his deep voice slicing through the tense silence. "I suggest you return to your guests. Your daughter is no longer subject to your directions."

My mother opened her mouth to snap back, but when her eyes met Nikolai’s icy, unblinking gaze, the words died in her throat. She stepped backward, swallowed hard, and retreated into the ballroom without another word.

Nikolai turned to me, offering his arm. "Ready, Evelyn? The second act is about to begin."

I placed my hand on his tailored sleeve. "Make them regret ever looking at me with pity."

When we walked through the double doors, the ballroom fell instantly silent. The cheerful chatter, the clinking of champagne glasses, the soft velvet melody of the orchestra—everything stopped as if frozen in time.

At the far end of the room, Julian was still holding Serena’s hand on the small raised stage, basking in what he thought was his grand triumph. But as his eyes landed on us, his smug expression shattered. His mouth opened slightly, his jaw dropping in absolute disbelief as he saw his older brother—the man who controlled the true power of the Moretti empire—walking arm-in-arm with the woman he had just publicly discarded.

Serena gasped, her grip on Julian’s arm tightening so hard her knuckles turned white. Her tear-stained, beautiful face twisted in confusion.

Nikolai didn't pause. He guided me straight toward the center of the room, stopping directly in front of the stage. The entire high-society crowd of Chicago held its breath.

"Julian," Nikolai spoke, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room without him even raising it. "You spoke earlier of destiny and truth. Allow me to clarify a truth for the family council and everyone present tonight."

Julian straightened his jacket, trying desperately to regain his composure, though a bead of sweat glistened on his temple. "Nikolai, what is the meaning of this? This is my night—"

"This was meant to be the night a Moretti joined with the Hart family," Nikolai interrupted coldly, stepping closer to the stage. "You chose to throw away a strategic alliance, a woman of unblemished intellect and loyalty, for a cheap theatrical spectacle. You proved your recklessness to every family in this room."

Julian’s face flushed deep crimson. "I fell in love! You don't understand—"

"I understand business, Julian. And I understand value," Nikolai said, his tone dropping an octave, heavy with implicit threat. He turned to face the entire room, taking my hand in his. "Since my younger brother lacks the wisdom to appreciate what was given to him, I am stepping in to correct his mistake. Evelyn Hart will not be leaving this family. She will be joining it as my wife."

A collective, audible gasp echoed across the grand ballroom.

Julian looked as if he had been struck by lightning. "You can't do that! She was my fiancée!"

"Was," I spoke up, stepping forward into the spotlight, looking Julian straight in the eyes. My voice didn't tremble. "You threw me away five minutes ago, Julian. Don't act offended now that someone who actually knows my worth has picked up what you dropped."

Serena took a step forward, her lower lip trembling in her classic, perfectly rehearsed act of innocent victimhood. "Evelyn... please... you're only doing this to hurt us... you don't love him..."

I looked at my younger sister—the girl I had spent five years covering for, fixing her mistakes, and sacrificing my own happiness to protect. "Love had nothing to do with what Julian just did to me, Serena. Why should it have anything to do with my choice?"

Nikolai raised his glass toward the crowd. "To the future of the Moretti empire. The wedding will take place in two weeks."

As whispers exploded across the room like wildfire, Julian stood paralyzed, watching the crown he thought he was about to wear slip through his fingers. And for the first time in my life, I felt completely, dangerously alive.
