Chapter 1 - The Document That Destroyed Us

The silence in the room was heavier than the snow piling against the windowpane. Declan sat motionless in the chair, his green eyes fixated on me as if I were a stranger who had spoken in a language he couldn't comprehend. Outside, the Seattle storm howled, but inside, the only sound was the soft, rhythmic breathing of our six-day-old son against my chest.
"What folder, Clara?" Declan’s voice was barely a whisper, rough around the edges, stripped of the commanding steel he used in boardrooms. "Tell me what you saw."
"The dark blue leather binder with the silver foil trim," I said, my voice trembling despite my best efforts. "It was sitting right beside your laptop on the morning of July fourteenth. Five days before I packed my bags and left. I wasn't looking for secrets, Declan. I was looking for a pen to sign the registry for our anniversary dinner."
Declan’s jaw clenched. "Go on."
"I opened it," I continued, holding James a little tighter. "Inside was a legal petition stamped by the King County Superior Court. It was an emergency petition for sole physical and legal custody of any future children born to us, citing 'maternal mental instability' and 'unfitness due to emotional volatility.' It had expert witness affidavits pre-signed by your family’s private psychiatrists. It detailed how you would restrict my access, how you would strip me of parental rights, and how I would be paid off with a five-million-dollar non-disclosure agreement."
Declan’s face went ghastly white. He stood up so fast the heavy mahogany chair skidded back against the hardwood floor. "That is impossible."
"I read it, Declan! I saw your signature line! I saw the stamp from Rowan Holdings’ chief legal counsel!" The tears I had held back for five long months finally burned behind my eyes. "I realized then what kind of world I had married into. You were a billionaire with endless resources, private security, and the top attorneys in the country. If I stayed and got pregnant, or if I told you I was already carrying your baby, you would have taken him from me before I could even hold him!"
"Clara, look at me!" Declan barked, stepping forward. He stopped himself instantly when James stirred, lowering his voice to a desperate, ragged tone. "Look at me and hear what I am saying. I never signed that document. I never authorized that petition. I didn't even know it existed."
"How could it be on your personal desk in your private study?" I countered, my heart pounding. "Nobody went into that room except you, your personal secretary, and your chief legal advisor."

Declan froze. The breath caught in his throat as a terrifying realization crossed his features. "Arthur Vance," he murmured, his voice dropping into a register of cold, deadly rage. "Arthur had master access to my study while I was in London that week."
Before I could process his words, the sharp glint of a red laser dot swept across the living room wall, passing right over James’s bassinet.
