CHAPTER 1 — THE BABY THAT WASN’T A BABY

The entire clinic went silent when the 66-year-old woman walked through the front door carrying a bag of newborn diapers.

Everyone stared.

Not because of her age.

But because of what she said next.

—“Please help me… I think my baby is coming soon.”

The receptionist looked up from her computer, confused.

For a few seconds, nobody knew whether to laugh or worry.

Behind the elderly woman stood her three adult children.

Their faces immediately turned red.

Mónica, the eldest daughter, covered her mouth and whispered:

—“Mom… please don’t start this again.”

But Doña Larisa Morales didn’t hear the embarrassment in her daughter’s voice.

She only held her swollen belly gently, like a mother protecting the most precious thing in the world.

—“I’m not imagining anything,” she said softly. “My baby is alive.”

A nervous laugh came from behind her.

It was Arturo, her oldest son.

—“Doctor, maybe you can explain to her that women don’t get pregnant at 66.”

Julián, the youngest, pulled out his phone.

He thought it was funny.

He recorded a few seconds, planning to send it to the family chat later.

"Mom has finally lost it," he thought.

None of them noticed the tears forming in their mother’s eyes.

Because for the first time in years…

Someone inside her family was looking at her.

Even if it was only to laugh.

Seven months earlier, Larisa had been living alone in her small house in Iztapalapa.

The same house where she had raised her children.

The same house where she and her husband Ramiro had dreamed about growing old together.

But life had changed after Ramiro died.

Five years ago, she buried the man who had held her hand through forty years of marriage.

After the funeral, her children promised:

"Mom, you’ll never be alone."

But promises are easy to make at funerals.

Keeping them is much harder.

Arturo only visited when he needed something related to the house.

Mónica called when she needed money.

Julián appeared whenever he had problems with his girlfriend.

But when Larisa needed someone to sit beside her and drink coffee…

The house remained silent.

Every night, she ate dinner alone.

Every morning, she woke up hoping someone would knock on her door.

Nobody did.

Until one strange morning.

At first, Larisa thought she was getting sick.

Her dresses became tighter.

Her stomach started growing.

She felt tired even after sleeping.

Then came the nausea.

The dizziness.

The strange pain deep inside her abdomen.

She ignored it for weeks.

At her age, she thought every pain was just another sign of getting older.

Until one night…

Something happened that changed everything.

She was standing in the kitchen washing dishes when she felt it.

A movement.

A sudden push from inside her stomach.

A kick.

The cup slipped from her hand.

It shattered on the floor.

Larisa froze.

Her hands began shaking.

"No…"

She placed both hands over her belly.

Another movement came.

Slow.

Clear.

Impossible.

Tears filled her eyes.

Because deep inside her heart, a thought appeared.

A thought she knew was crazy.

But a thought she couldn't stop believing.

"Ramiro left me a miracle."

The next morning, she went to a public clinic.

The doctor listened carefully.

He looked confused.

Some of her hormone tests were unusual.

There were signs that needed further examination.

—“You need to see a specialist,” he told her.

But Larisa never returned.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was hopeful.

For the first time in five years…

She felt needed.

She started preparing.

She bought yellow yarn from the market.

Every night, she knitted tiny socks with trembling hands.

She found an old wooden crib someone was throwing away and repaired it herself.

She even placed a small blanket inside.

The neighbors began noticing.

Whispers started spreading.

"The old woman on Fresno Street says she's pregnant."

"She has completely lost her mind."

Someone posted about her online.

A few people laughed.

Others called her crazy.

But Larisa didn’t care.

Every night, she sat on her bed, touched her stomach, and whispered:

—“Don’t worry, my baby. Even if everyone laughs at us… I will always believe in you.”

When her children found out about the rumors, they didn’t come because they were worried.

They came because they were embarrassed.

Mónica entered the house first.

Her expression was cold.

—“Mom, what are you doing?”

Larisa smiled.

She held up a tiny pair of knitted socks.

—“Look. They’re almost finished.”

Her daughter stared at them.

Then looked at her brothers.

They exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Arturo sighed.

—“We’re taking you to a doctor.”

Larisa smiled.

She thought they finally cared.

She didn’t realize they only wanted to prove she was wrong.

At the clinic, Doctor Ramiro Salcedo listened carefully.

Unlike her children, he didn’t laugh.

He asked questions.

He examined her.

He looked at her medical history.

Then he asked:

—“Mrs. Morales, when was your last menstrual cycle?”

Larisa answered quietly.

—“Many years ago.”

The doctor became serious.

—“And you truly believe you feel movement?”

She nodded.

—“Every night.”

The doctor said nothing.

He simply asked her to lie down.

The room became colder.

The ultrasound machine turned on.

The nurse applied the gel.

Larisa stared at the ceiling.

Her heart was racing.

She wasn’t afraid.

She was excited.

She was waiting to hear what she had dreamed about for months.

A heartbeat.

A tiny heartbeat.

The screen turned gray.

The doctor moved the device slowly.

Everyone watched.

Except her children.

They were already smiling.

They thought the moment of humiliation had arrived.

Mónica crossed her arms.

—“You’ll see, doctor. There’s nothing there.”

But then…

The doctor stopped moving.

His face changed.

The smile disappeared.

He leaned closer.

Adjusted the machine.

Pressed a few buttons.

Then he stood up.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Larisa noticed immediately.

—“Doctor?”

No answer.

The doctor looked at the screen again.

His hands started trembling.

Then he turned toward the nurse.

—“Call emergency services.”

The room froze.

Arturo stopped smiling.

—“What’s happening?”

The doctor didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked directly at Larisa’s children.

His voice became firm.

—“I need everyone except the patient to leave the room.”

Mónica frowned.

—“We are her family.”

The doctor looked at her.

—“Exactly.”

His tone made everyone uncomfortable.

—“That is why you need to leave.”

Outside the room, the children waited.

Minutes passed.

Then ten minutes.

Then twenty.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, the doctor opened the door.

His face looked completely different.

Like he had just discovered something impossible.

He held the ultrasound images in his hand.

Arturo stood up.

—“Doctor, is my mother pregnant?”

The doctor looked at him.

Then at Mónica.

Then at Julián.

And slowly shook his head.

—“No.”

Relief appeared on their faces.

But it disappeared when he continued.

—“Your mother is not carrying a baby.”

A silence filled the hallway.

Larisa looked confused.

—“Then what is inside me?”

The doctor took a deep breath.

And said words that would change her family forever.

—“Mrs. Morales… there is a massive tumor occupying almost your entire abdomen.”

Everyone froze.

Mónica covered her mouth.

Julián lowered his phone.

Arturo stepped back.

But the doctor wasn’t finished.

—“The strange part is what we found inside it.”

He handed them the ultrasound image.

On the screen were white curved shapes.

Aligned.

Hard.

Impossible.

They looked exactly like…

Teeth.

Larisa’s hands began shaking.

—“What does that mean?”

The doctor looked at her with sadness.

—“It means this mass has been growing inside your body for decades.”

A cold silence followed.

Then he added:

—“And based on its size… it may rupture at any moment.”

The ambulance sirens could already be heard outside.

Larisa looked down at the tiny yellow socks in her hands.

The dream she had protected for seven months was disappearing.

But what nobody knew…

Was that the thing growing inside her body was connected to a secret from her past.

A secret her husband Ramiro had taken to his grave.

And when the doctors discovered the truth during surgery…

Even they couldn’t believe what they found.

Because inside that tumor was not just a medical mystery…

May you like

It was a hidden chapter of Larisa’s life that had been buried for forty years.

TO BE CONTINUED…
