CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET HIDDEN INSIDE HER BODY FOR 40 YEARS

The ambulance lights painted the walls of the clinic red and blue.
Doña Larisa Morales sat silently on the stretcher, holding the tiny yellow socks she had knitted for the baby she believed was coming.
Nobody knew what hurt more…
The pain inside her abdomen…
Or the look on her children’s faces.
They were no longer laughing.
They were afraid.
For the first time in many years, Arturo, Mónica, and Julián looked at their mother not as a burden…
But as a person they might lose.
—“Doctor, is she going to be okay?” Mónica finally asked.
Doctor Ramiro Salcedo looked at her.
His expression was serious.
—“I don’t know yet.”
Those four words terrified them more than anything.
At the hospital, Larisa was taken immediately for more tests.
The doctors studied every image carefully.
The mass was enormous.
It had occupied almost her entire abdominal cavity.
But what confused them was not only its size.
It was what was inside.
The scans showed strange formations.
Hard structures.
Calcified shapes.
Something that looked almost like bones.
And teeth.
The younger doctors whispered among themselves.
—“Could it really be a teratoma?”
The head surgeon, Doctor Esteban Vargas, looked at the images for a long time.
Then he slowly nodded.
—“Possibly.”
A teratoma.
A rare type of tumor that can contain different types of tissue.
Sometimes hair.
Sometimes bone.
Sometimes teeth.
But the size of Larisa’s case was extremely unusual.
Especially in a woman who was 66 years old.
Meanwhile, in the waiting room…
Her children sat together for the first time in years.
But nobody spoke.
The silence was uncomfortable.
Finally, Julián broke it.
—“Do you think Mom knew?”
Arturo looked at him.
—“Knew what?”
Julián looked down.
—“That something was wrong.”
Nobody answered.
Because they all knew the truth.
Their mother had been suffering for months.
And they ignored it.
They laughed.
They recorded her.
They called her crazy.
Mónica wiped her eyes.
—“I thought she was embarrassing us.”
Her voice broke.
—“I never thought she was scared.”
Two hours later, Doctor Vargas came out.
The family immediately stood up.
—“How is she?”
The doctor took a deep breath.
—“We need to operate as soon as possible.”
Arturo became pale.
—“Is it cancer?”
The doctor paused.
—“We don’t know yet.”
That answer frightened them even more.
—“But we found something unusual.”
He looked at the three children.
—“Your mother has had this mass for a very long time.”
Mónica frowned.
—“How long?”
The doctor looked at the medical images.
—“Possibly decades.”
Decades.
The word echoed in their minds.
When Larisa woke up before surgery, she found her children beside her bed.
For a moment, she smiled.
She thought they had finally come because they loved her.
—“Did you bring the crib home?” she whispered.
Nobody answered.
The guilt was too heavy.
Mónica grabbed her mother’s hand.
—“Mom…”
Larisa looked at her.
—“I’m sorry.”
Those words shocked them.
Not because she apologized.
But because she was apologizing while she was the one suffering.
—“I’m sorry I worried you,” Larisa continued.
Arturo turned away.
His eyes filled with tears.
Because his mother was still protecting them.
Even now.
Before the doctors took her into surgery, Larisa called the nurse.
—“Can I ask you something?”
The nurse smiled.
—“Of course.”
Larisa held the small yellow socks.
—“If I don’t wake up… could you keep these?”
The nurse’s smile disappeared.
—“Mrs. Morales…”
Larisa looked at the tiny socks.
—“I made them for someone who never arrived.”
The nurse held her hand.
—“You’re going to wake up.”
But Larisa only smiled sadly.
Because deep inside…
She felt something she couldn’t explain.
Like this wasn’t just about a tumor.
Like her body was trying to tell her something.
The surgery began at midnight.
Six doctors surrounded the operating table.
The room was completely silent.
The tumor was larger than expected.
It had attached itself to surrounding tissues.
Every movement had to be careful.
Hours passed.
Then suddenly…
The surgeon stopped.
—“Wait.”
Everyone looked at him.
—“What is it?”
He stared at the mass.
His face changed.
—“There’s something else.”
The assistant moved closer.
Inside the tumor, beneath the layers of tissue…
They saw something strange.
Something that should not have been there.
A small metallic object.
The surgeon carefully removed it.
It was old.
Rusty.
But recognizable.
A small silver pendant.
The room went silent.
When Larisa’s children were called back, Doctor Vargas placed the object on the table.
—“Do you recognize this?”
The three stared.
Then Mónica gasped.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
—“No…”
Arturo looked confused.
—“What?”
Mónica’s face turned white.
Because she knew exactly what it was.
It belonged to her father.
Ramiro.
The same pendant he wore every day.
The same pendant buried with him five years earlier.
Or at least…
That was what they thought.
The doctor looked at Larisa’s medical history again.
Then he said something that made everyone freeze.
—“Your mother’s tumor appears to have developed around something that was inside her body long before today.”
Arturo shook his head.
—“That’s impossible.”
Doctor Vargas looked at him.
—“Your father died five years ago.”
Nobody understood.
Until the doctor opened another file.
Inside were old medical records from 40 years earlier.
Records that had never been seen by the family.
Records with Larisa’s name.
And one sentence written by a doctor decades ago:
“Patient refused emergency surgery after losing unborn child. Foreign object remains.”
Mónica began crying.
—“Unborn child?”
The room became silent.
Because suddenly…
The story Larisa told everyone sounded different.
Maybe she wasn’t crazy.
Maybe she wasn’t imagining everything.
Maybe the movement she felt…
The strange sensations…
The dream of a baby…
Were connected to something that happened before any of them were born.
Something their mother had hidden for forty years.
When Larisa finally woke up after surgery, the first thing she asked was:
—“Did my baby survive?”
The doctor sat beside her.
He didn’t know how to answer.
Because the truth was impossible.
The thing she thought was her baby…
Was not a baby.
But the secret they discovered inside her…
Would change everything her children believed about their own family.
And when Larisa finally revealed what happened on the night of her first pregnancy…
May you like
Her children would realize they had spent their entire lives judging the wrong person.
