CHAPTER 4 — THE LETTER THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The old envelope trembled between Doña Larisa’s hands.

Forty years.

That was how long it had been hidden.

Forty years of silence.

Forty years of pretending the past did not hurt.

Her three children stood frozen beside the hospital bed.

They had spent their entire lives believing they knew their family story.

But in one night…

Everything had changed.

The woman they laughed at.

The woman they called confused.

The woman they thought had lost her mind…

Was carrying a truth they never imagined.

Doctor Vargas looked at Larisa carefully.

—“Mrs. Morales, are you sure you want to open it now?”

Larisa stared at the envelope.

Her eyes were full of fear.

—“I have been afraid of this letter longer than I have been afraid of death.”

Nobody spoke.

The nurse slowly left the room.

The door closed.

And for the first time in decades…

Larisa opened the secret that had been buried with her pain.

Inside was a small piece of paper.

The ink had faded.

But the handwriting was unmistakable.

Ramiro’s handwriting.

The man she loved.

The man she lost.

Her hands shook as she began reading.

“My love, Larisa…
If you are reading this, it means I didn't have the courage to tell you the truth myself.”

Her breathing stopped.

Mónica grabbed her brother’s arm.

Arturo whispered:

—“What truth?”

Larisa continued.

“That night was not your fault.
The accident was not caused by me.”

A strange silence filled the room.

Larisa covered her mouth.

Because those were the words she had waited forty years to hear.

Ramiro knew.

He knew she blamed herself.

He knew she carried guilt.

But why had he hidden this?

The letter continued.

“I found out who caused the accident.
I wanted to tell you.
But when I discovered the truth, you were already fighting to survive.”

Larisa’s eyes widened.

Her hands started shaking.

“Your father asked me to stay silent. He said the truth would destroy our family.”

Everyone looked confused.

“Your father?”

Arturo frowned.

—“Grandfather?”

Larisa nodded slowly.

Nobody understood.

For years, Larisa had believed the accident was a terrible coincidence.

A rainy night.

A truck.

A tragedy.

But the truth was much darker.

Her own father had been involved.

Not intentionally.

But his actions had changed everything.

The memory returned.

Forty years earlier.

Larisa was young.

Happy.

Pregnant with her first child.

She and Ramiro had dreamed about the future.

A small house.

A garden.

A baby running through the yard.

That night, they were driving home when they saw a vehicle speeding toward them.

Ramiro tried to avoid it.

But the road was wet.

The crash happened in seconds.

After waking up in the hospital, everyone told her the same thing:

“It was an accident.”

But nobody told her the complete truth.

Ramiro’s letter revealed what happened afterward.

“Your father borrowed my car that night.”

Larisa froze.

Her eyes moved quickly over the words.

“He was afraid to tell us because he had been drinking. He thought nobody would believe him.”

The room went silent.

Arturo stepped back.

—“Grandfather caused the accident?”

Larisa couldn’t answer.

She was crying too hard.

But the letter had more.

Something worse.

Something that made even Doctor Vargas stop breathing.

“Larisa, I need you to know something else.
The baby you lost…”

Her fingers tightened around the paper.

Everyone waited.

“The doctors were wrong.”

The room froze.

Mónica whispered:

—“What?”

Larisa looked at the letter.

Her lips trembled.

“Our baby was alive after the accident.”

Nobody moved.

The words felt impossible.

Doctor Vargas immediately looked confused.

—“That doesn't make sense.”

Larisa kept reading.

“The doctors heard a heartbeat. They knew there was still a chance.”

Tears fell onto the paper.

“But your father pressured them to tell you the baby was gone.”

A wave of shock hit the room.

Mónica covered her mouth.

Arturo stared at his mother.

Julián stepped closer.

—“Why would Grandpa do that?”

Larisa looked completely broken.

Because she finally understood.

The pain she carried for forty years…

Was built on a lie.

Then came the final part of the letter.

The part Ramiro had hidden until his death.

“Our child survived for a few hours after the accident.”

Larisa stopped reading.

Her hands froze.

The room became silent.

“I held our baby in my arms.”

Everyone started crying.

Even Arturo.

Because for the first time…

They realized their mother wasn't crazy.

She wasn't imagining a baby.

She was a mother who had lost a child.

A child she never had the chance to know.

But then Ramiro wrote one final sentence.

A sentence that changed the entire mystery.

“Larisa, our baby was not the only thing they took from us that night.”

The doctor leaned closer.

—“What does that mean?”

Larisa slowly turned the page.

There was another paragraph.

But before she could read it…

The hospital monitor beside her suddenly started beeping loudly.

Her blood pressure dropped.

The nurses rushed in.

—“Everyone move away!”

The letter fell from her hands.

The final words remained hidden.

Hours later, when Larisa woke up again…

The first thing she asked was:

—“Where is the letter?”

Nobody answered.

Because the letter was gone.

Someone had taken it.

Someone who knew exactly what secret it contained.

And the person who took it…

Was not a stranger.

The next morning, security footage revealed something shocking.

At 3:17 a.m., while Larisa was unconscious…

A person entered her hospital room.

Covered by a mask.

Walking slowly.

Confidently.

Like someone who knew exactly where to go.

When the camera zoomed in…

Mónica screamed.

Because she recognized the person immediately.

It was someone they all thought had been dead for years.

Someone connected to the accident.

Someone who knew the truth about Larisa’s lost baby.

May you like

And someone who had spent four decades making sure the truth never came out.
