Chapter 6 - THE EMPTY CAGEBack in the VIP recovery suite, the atmosphere was completely different.

When Marcus and I walked in, Chloe was sitting up against the pillows, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering city skyline. The television was muted, playing soundless news clips of the federal raid unfolding downstairs in the hospital lobby.
She turned her head as the door opened. Her eyes were red-rimmed from crying, but for the first time in months, the haunting, hollow terror in her expression had been replaced by something much stronger:
Relief.
“Mom,” Chloe whispered, her voice cracking slightly. She looked down at her hands, then back up at me. “I… I saw the live broadcast on the tablet. They’re taking him away in cuffs. The news anchors are calling it a pharmaceutical fraud scandal.”
I walked over to the bed, gently sitting down on the edge where Julian had stood just hours earlier threatening her life. I reached out and stroked her hair.
“It’s more than fraud, sweetheart,” I said gently. “It’s over. Julian will never step foot in this hospital again. He will never touch you, and he will never threaten your child.”
A heavy, shuddering sob escaped Chloe’s lips. She leaned forward, burying her face in my shoulder, her arms wrapping tightly around my waist as if she were afraid I might vanish into thin air.
I held her close, rocking her gently the way I used to when she was a little girl waking up from a nightmare. Only this time, the monster under the bed was real—and we had locked him away for good.
“He told me I wouldn't survive,” Chloe sobbed quietly into my jacket. “Every time he left a mark… he whispered that no one would ever believe me because he owned this entire city.”
“He owned a building, Chloe,” I whispered back fiercely against her hair. “He never owned you.”
Marcus cleared his throat softly from near the doorway, holding up a secure tablet. “Elena, the attending obstetrician assigned to take over tomorrow’s delivery is Dr. Elizabeth Vance—no relation, thankfully. She has reviewed Chloe’s file, confirmed that the baby is healthy, and scheduled a safe, standard C-section for 9:00 AM tomorrow morning in the main surgical wing. With me stationed outside the operating theater and two federal marshals guarding the doors, absolutely nothing will go wrong.”
Chloe lifted her head, wiping a tear from her cheek, looking at Marcus with hesitant gratitude. “Thank you… whoever you are.”
“Call me Uncle Marcus, my dear,” he smiled warmly, adjusting his suit jacket. “Your mother and I go back a long way. Nobody hurts a Vance and gets away with it.”
May you like
I smiled faintly, standing up from the bed and checking my watch. The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the city sky in shades of deep bruised purple and gold.
“Get some rest, Chloe,” I said, smoothing the blankets over her bump. “Tomorrow morning, we’re going to meet our newest family member. And the world outside these walls is going to look entirely different.”
