Chapter 8 - THE NEW EMPIREForty-two minutes later.

The heavy double doors of the operating theater swung open.

Dr. Elizabeth Vance stepped out into the hallway, pulling off her surgical cap with a tired, triumphant smile, her scrubs immaculate under the bright overhead lights. Behind her, a neonatal nurse wheeled a clear plastic incubator containing a tiny, swaddled bundle that let out a robust, healthy, furious wail of protest against the cold world.

I stood up instantly, my heart hammering against my ribs with a force I hadn't felt in years.

“It’s a girl,” Dr. Vance announced, her voice ringing out clearly down the quiet corridor. “Eight pounds, two ounces. Perfect health. Strong lungs.”

Tears sprang to my eyes, hot and blinding, as I rushed forward to look through the clear plastic shield of the incubator.

Inside lay a tiny, beautiful baby girl with a shock of dark hair and miniature fists waving angrily in the air. She looked just like Chloe—delicate, precious, and fiercely alive.

Marcus Sterling stepped up beside me, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his stern face. “Well, Elena. It looks like the new generation is off to a very strong start.”

“Yes, she is,” I murmured, pressing my fingertips gently against the clear plastic of the incubator.

An hour later, Chloe was safely resting in a sunlit recovery room, propped up against soft white pillows, holding her newborn daughter in her arms. The tension lines around her eyes were entirely gone, replaced by an overwhelming, radiant peace.

As I sat beside the bed watching her stroke the baby’s tiny cheek, my phone vibrated in my pocket.

I pulled it out and glanced at the encrypted screen.

[NOTIFICATION: THORNE MEDICAL ASSETS OFFICIALLY SEIZED. BOARD RESTRUCTURING COMPLETE. NEW APPOINTMENT PENDING: ELENA VANCE AS CHAIRPERSON OF THE ETHICS AND GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE.]

I stared at the screen for a long, quiet moment.

Julian had wanted to own everything. He had wanted control, power, and absolute dominance over the people around him, believing that fear was the strongest currency in the world.

He had forgotten a fundamental truth of human nature:

A mother protecting her child is a force far more powerful than any empire ever built on glass.

I slipped the phone back into my pocket, leaned over the hospital bed, and gently kissed both my daughter and my new granddaughter on the forehead.

The past was buried. The cage was broken.

And our new empire was just beginning.
