Chapter 5 - Shadows in the PenthouseThe black Mercedes convoy slid silently through the gated iron security perimeter of the Benevventi estate—a sprawling, secluded fortress nestled in the wooded hills overlooking the North District.

Inside the main car, Vicki had finally woken up, rubbing her sleepy eyes and clutching the shivering black puppy tightly to her chest. She looked out the tinted window, staring up at the massive stone mansion that looked like something straight out of a fairy tale, complete with towering arches and warm, glowing windows.
"Where are we?" Vicki whispered, looking up sideways at Calcio with her big, solemn eyes.
Calcio, who had spent the entire three-minute drive in deep, calculating silence, looked down at her. The cold, lethal mafia boss melted away instantly, replaced by a strange, quiet gentleness he hadn't shown anyone in over a decade.
"You're safe now, bambina," Calcio said softly, reaching out to gently adjust the collar of her oversized pink jacket. "This is my home. And from tonight... it's yours, too."
The car door opened, and Marco stepped out, holding a large black umbrella to shield them from the steady drizzle. Calcio stepped out first, extending a large, calloused hand to help Vicki down. Her taped-up sneakers splashed softly into a puddle before her feet hit the dry, heated stone entryway of the mansion.
Elena stepped out from the second SUV, her legs shaking so badly she nearly stumbled. Stephano caught her elbow just in time, guiding her gently toward the entrance. When Elena saw the scale of the estate, her breath caught in her throat.
"Calcio..." she choked out, her voice trembling as her older brother walked over to her. "You... you shouldn't have brought me here. If Vance’s superiors find out—"
"Vance’s superiors are currently learning what happens when they touch a Benevventi," Calcio interrupted coldly, his eyes flashing in the porch light. He reached out and gently pulled his sister into a fierce, protective embrace—the first hug they had shared in thirteen years.
Elena buried her face in his broad shoulder, letting out all the terror, grief, and exhaustion she had bottled up over the last forty-eight hours. "I was so scared, Calcio... they were going to take everything. My lab, my life... Vicki..."
"I know," Calcio murmured into her hair, his arms tightening around her. "I'm sorry I wasn't there sooner. But nobody will ever touch you or my niece again. You have my word."
Inside the grand foyer, a squad of housekeepers and medical staff immediately rushed forward. They took the little black puppy—who was quickly christened 'Nero' by Vicki—into the warm kitchen for food and a gentle bath, while another team wrapped Elena in a warm cashmere shawl and led her toward the parlor fireplace.
But Calcio didn't join them by the fire. He walked straight down the dimly lit stone corridor toward his private underground war room.
Stephano and Marco followed closely behind, their faces grim.
The heavy steel door of the war room slid open, revealing massive digital screens mapping out the financial networks, shipping routes, and political affiliations of the entire city. At the center of the room sat a secure tactical terminal currently displaying the corporate database of Apex Capital Group.
"Boss," Stephano said, dropping a heavy briefcase full of stolen physical hard drives onto the steel table. "We wiped their local servers. But our intelligence feeds show that Apex wasn't acting alone. They were a front for the San Marco Syndicate—the Italian mafia faction out of the East Port. They're trying to muscle in on our territory by controlling medical tech monopolies."
Calcio walked slowly to the main terminal, his hands clasped behind his back. The red glow of the computer monitors reflected off his dark eyes.
The East Port syndicate. Led by Don Vincente Moretti—an old rival who had spent years trying to break Calcio’s monopoly over the North District. Moretti thought he could wage a quiet war through shell corporations and corporate debt traps.
Calcio picked up his glass of aged whiskey, took a slow sip, and set it down with a sharp clink.
"Moretti thinks he can play chess with human lives," Calcio said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm whisper. "He thinks corporate boardrooms are safe from blood."

Calcio turned around, looking at his two most loyal enforcers.
"Send a message to Moretti's primary shipping port at Pier 4," Calcio ordered coldly. "Tell him his midnight shipment of contraband belongs to us now. And if he wants it back... tell him to come ask me himself."
