Chapter 7 - The Morning AfterThe morning sun broke through the heavy storm clouds, casting a golden, warm light over the sprawling gardens of the Benevventi estate. Inside the grand manor, the smell of fresh coffee and warm pastries drifted down the arched hallways.

In the sunlit conservatory, Vicki sat cross-legged on a plush velvet sofa, giggling uncontrollably as Nero—now clean, brushed, and wearing a tiny red ribbon around his neck—frantically licked her nose.
Dr. Elena Benevventi sat across from her at a marble table, holding a steaming cup of coffee in her hands. She looked rested for the first time in months, though the dark circles under her eyes still hinted at the trauma of the previous night.
The heavy mahogany doors of the conservatory opened, and Calcio walked in. He had changed into a fresh black shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the intricate black tattoos that wound around his wrists.
Vicki’s eyes lit up. She scrambled off the sofa, clutching Nero tightly to her chest, and ran straight over to Calcio, stopping just a foot away.
"Mr. Calcio," she whispered shyly, looking up at him with those too-old eyes. "Are the bad men still going to take my mommy?"
Calcio crouched down instantly, ignoring the expensive fabric of his trousers as they touched the marble floor. He looked at the little girl, then glanced briefly at his sister across the room, before returning his gaze to Vicki.
"No, bambina," Calcio said, his voice softer than anyone outside this family had ever heard it. "The bad men are never coming back. Your mother's lab is safe, her contracts are burned, and your home is secure."
Vicki let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief that seemed to shed ten years of trauma from her tiny shoulders. Impulsively, she stepped forward and wrapped her small arms around Calcio’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder.
Calcio froze for a fraction of a second—not accustomed to physical affection from children—before slowly, awkwardly wrapping his large arms around her small frame, holding her securely against the world.
Elena watched them from across the room, tears welling in her eyes once more. She set her coffee cup down and walked over, kneeling beside them.
"Calcio..." Elena whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "You risked everything—your empire, your life, your safety—just to protect us. Why? You didn't have to come back into the fire."
Calcio looked up at his sister, his dark eyes softening. "You chose a clean life, Elena. I chose the darkness so you wouldn't have to live in it. But if anyone ever thinks they can reach into my shadow to hurt my family... they'll find out why I rule the night."
Before Elena could answer, the heavy double doors at the end of the conservatory banged open.
Marco strode into the room, his face pale, holding a secure encrypted satellite tablet in his hands.
"Boss," Marco said urgently, ignoring the domestic scene. "We have an incoming video transmission from Don Vincente Moretti. He saw what happened at Pier 4."

Calcio gently set Vicki down, standing up to his full, imposing height. The warmth in his eyes vanished instantly, replaced once again by the cold, calculating fury of a mafia boss preparing for war.
"Put it on the main screen," Calcio commanded.
