Chapter 6 - The Federal ArraignmentThe federal courtroom in downtown Seattle was packed to capacity by 8:45 AM. Reporters, legal bloggers, and local onlookers crammed into the oak-paneled gallery, whispering excitedly as federal marshals led Eleanor Vance and Caleb Vance through the side doors.

They were no longer the untouchable titans of county society. Both wore standard-issue orange jumpsuits, their wrists cuffed and chained to their waists. My mother’s French twist was undone, her silver hair hanging loose around a face that looked ten years older than it had the night before. Caleb stared straight ahead, refusing to meet the gaze of the press or the federal prosecutors seated at the plaintiff's table.
I sat in the front row beside Emma, who had insisted on discharging herself against medical advice so she could witness the dismantling of her tormentors face-to-face. A federal nurse and a portable heart monitor sat discreetly behind us just in case, but Emma’s posture was rigid and unbroken.
Judge Thomas Vance—no relation, thankfully—rapped his gavel twice, silencing the courtroom instantly.
"Call the matter of United States v. Eleanor Vance and Caleb Vance," the judge announced, adjusting his spectacles as he scanned the dense stack of legal briefs piled before him. "The court has reviewed the emergency federal writ, the State Bureau of Investigation evidentiary files, the medical records from St. Jude’s Hospital, and the financial ledger recovered from the primary residence. Counsel for the defense, you may state your appearances."
A jittery court-appointed public defender stood up, sweating profusely under the weight of the mountain of evidence stacked against his clients. "Your Honor, my clients maintain their innocence of all federal charges. We request a standard release on own recognizance pending a preliminary trial date—"
"Denied," Judge Vance interrupted sharply, not even looking up from the documents. "The court has reviewed the audio transcripts of the defendant's confession, the photographic evidence of systematic domestic torture, and the verified financial records detailing decades of witness intimidation, obstruction of justice, and corporate fraud. Furthermore, the federal prosecutor has just filed an emergency motion to seize all corporate and personal assets associated with the Vance Family Trust under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act."
A collective gasp rippled through the gallery.
My mother’s head snapped up, her eyes locking onto the judge with venomous disbelief. "You cannot do this!" she shouted, standing up so abruptly her chains rattled violently against the defense table. "This court has no jurisdiction over private family matters! My family built this city! We own—"
"You own nothing anymore, Mrs. Vance," Judge Vance stated coldly, banging his gavel down with a force that rattled the microphones. "As of this moment, your assets are frozen, your corporate board has been dissolved by federal receivership, and you are being remanded to the federal detention center without the possibility of bail."
As the marshals stepped forward to grab my mother’s shoulders and force her back down into her seat, she twisted her head around, her blazing eyes locking directly onto mine across the courtroom aisle.
"You think you've won, Lucas?" she shrieked as they dragged her toward the side exit. "You're nothing without this family! You'll starve! You'll—"

The heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting off her voice entirely.
Caleb didn't say a word. He kept his head bowed as the marshals led him out through the opposite door, his legal career reduced to ashes in less than twelve hours.
