CHAPTER 1 — The Woman With the Sack of Sand

The old woman appeared at the border so often that people eventually stopped asking her name.
To everyone there, she was simply "The Sand Grandma."
Every morning, at exactly six o'clock, while the mist still covered the checkpoint and the first trucks lined up to cross, the familiar squeaking sound of rusty bicycle wheels echoed across the pavement.
The guards didn't even need to look.
"She's here."
The same faded gray coat.
The same patched gloves.
The same worn-out bicycle that looked as if it would collapse after one more ride.
And, as always...
A heavy burlap sack filled with gray sand sat inside the front basket.
At first, everyone laughed.
"What kind of grandmother transports sand every single day?"
But after the first month...
The jokes disappeared.
Because nobody could explain it.
One morning, Captain Victor Novak stood beside the inspection lane watching her approach.
He had spent twenty-five years catching smugglers.
Drugs.
Gold.
Diamonds.
Weapons.
Rare antiques.
Even endangered animals hidden inside furniture.
Yet something about this tiny old woman bothered him more than any criminal he'd ever arrested.
She looked...
Too calm.
Too ordinary.
Almost as if she wanted everyone to notice her.
"Open the sack."
Without saying a word, the grandmother untied the rope.
The guards poured every grain of sand onto a large inspection table.
They pushed metal rods through it.
Ran powerful magnets across it.
Spread the sand into thin layers.
Every handful was examined.
Nothing.
Only sand.
Victor frowned.
"X-ray the bicycle."
Mechanics rolled the bicycle into the inspection garage.
The wheels were removed.
The tires were cut open.
The frame was scanned.
The handlebars were unscrewed.
Even the pedals were dismantled.
Nothing.
No hidden compartments.
No drugs.
No cash.
No gold.
The old woman simply waited outside with folded hands, quietly watching the birds flying above the checkpoint.
Not once did she complain.
When the bicycle was finally reassembled, she smiled politely.
"Finished, sons?"
Victor narrowed his eyes.
"Grandma...why do you cross every single day?"
She smiled.
"Old habits keep old people alive."
"What's on the other side?"
"My garden."
"What garden needs hundreds of sacks of sand every year?"
She only chuckled.
"One that keeps growing."
The answer irritated him.
For weeks he ordered surprise inspections.
Sometimes she was searched twice.
Sometimes three times in one day.
Every laboratory confirmed the same thing.
Ordinary river sand.
Nothing else.
Soon the checkpoint became obsessed with her.
New recruits heard stories before they even started work.
"If you want to prove yourself," veterans would joke,
"Figure out Grandma Sand."
The mystery spread beyond the border station.
Customs officers from neighboring districts came just to witness the inspections.
One intelligence officer secretly suggested she might be delivering coded messages.
Another believed the sand contained microscopic diamonds.
A third insisted foreign spies were somehow involved.
Every theory sounded ridiculous.
Yet no better explanation existed.
Months turned into years.
The old bicycle became as famous as the woman riding it.
It squeaked through rain.
Through snow.
Through unbearable summer heat.
Always carrying another sack.
Always leaving with an empty basket.
Captain Victor grew older.
His hair slowly turned gray.
His son finished college.
His daughter got married.
Entire governments changed.
Still...
Every morning...
There she was.
One snowy December day, Victor made a decision.
"If we can't find what's inside the sand..."
He looked toward the bicycle.
"...maybe we've been asking the wrong question all along."
The next morning...
Instead of inspecting only the sack...
He ordered his officers to secretly follow the grandmother after she crossed the border.
None of them imagined...
May you like
That what they would witness before sunset would completely change everything they believed about the mysterious old woman.
To be continued...
