Chapter 5 - The Rise of the Empress

Viral Hook: 🔥 FROM WAITRESS TO QUEEN: The mob boss survived, but he didn't leave alone. The woman they all mocked just inherited an empire... 👑🔥The silver-haired man dropped to his knees next to Nikolai, instantly cutting open his shirt and applying advanced medical clotting agents to the wounds. "We secured the upstairs, Boss. The second shooter is taken care of. The diner manager is alive, but he's unconscious. What do we do with the witnesses?"
Nikolai didn't answer his man. He kept his eyes locked on me. "Maya," he rasped, his voice weak but filled with an undeniable, terrifying respect. "She saved my life. Twice. If she hadn't broken that bastard's jaw, I'd be a corpse."
The silver-haired man looked up at me, his eyes widening in surprise. He bowed his head slightly. "I am Dimitri, Mr. Volkov's underboss. My apologies for doubting you, ma'am."
"We need to move," I said, standing up and wiping the dust and blood from my jeans. "The police will eventually notice the gunshots or the missing people. This place isn't safe."
Nikolai managed a grim smile as Dimitri helped him to his feet. "She's right. Dimitri... pack her up. She comes with us."
"Wait, what?" I blinked, stepping back. "I'm not going with you. I have a life. I have a... well, I have a apartment."
"An apartment you can barely afford, a job where men treat you like garbage, and a manager who calls you names," Nikolai said, stopping as a wave of pain hit him, but keeping his gaze fierce. "The Bratva—the men who attacked me—they saw your face. They know you helped me. If you stay here, you die. Come with me. I offer you protection. And I offer you something else."
"What?"
"Respect. And power."
Two hours later, I found myself sitting in the grand library of a heavily fortified estate in the upstate mountains. The room was warm, smelling of old leather and expensive scotch. I had been given clean clothes—a soft, elegant black sweater and silk pants that actually fit my curves comfortably, instead of the constricting, cheap uniform of the diner.
Dimitri entered the room, carrying a tray with tea and a thick manila folder.
"Mr. Volkov is out of surgery. The bullets missed his vital organs. He will make a full recovery," Dimitri said, setting the tray down. "He asked me to give you this."
I opened the folder. Inside were the deeds to the diner, the land it sat on, and a corporate registration form.
"What is this?"
"As of tonight, you own the diner, Maya. Mr. Volkov bought it out from the parent corporation through a shell company. Todd has been fired and blacklisted from the restaurant industry. As for the man named Brad..." Dimitri smiled coldly. "He will spend the rest of his life walking with a permanent limp, remembering the night he insulted the wrong woman."
I stared at the paperwork. In one night, I had gone from a mocked, broke waitress to an independent business owner with the backing of the most powerful syndicate in the country.
"Nikolai wants to see you," Dimitri said, bowing.
I walked down the grand hallway to the master bedroom. Nikolai was propped up on plush pillows, heavily bandaged but looking much more alive. The fierce, intimidating aura was back in full force.
"Do you like your gift?" he asked softly.
"It's too much," I said, sitting in the armchair beside his bed. "I just wanted to survive the night."
"You did more than survive, Maya. You conquered. In my world, loyalty and courage are rarer than diamonds. You have both. I want you by my side. Not as a servant. Not as a mistress. As my partner. I'm going to war to take back my city from the men who betrayed me, and I need someone with steel in their spine to help me run it."
I looked at him, realizing my life would never, ever be the same. The shy, insecure girl who let people laugh at her weight died in that basement.
"On one condition," I said, leaning forward.
Nikolai raised an eyebrow. "Name it."

"We remodel the diner. And we never serve crushed tomatoes again."
Nikolai burst into a loud, booming laugh that echoed through the mansion. "Done."
