Chapter 15 - The Unspoken Promise

The aftermath of the rail yard ambush brought a lasting, profound peace to the West Side. The federal investigations quietly closed due to a lack of credible evidence, and the Elena Vance Foundation expanded its reach, opening three new satellite centers across Illinois.

My life had become a seamless blend of high-stakes corporate strategy and deeply personal philanthropy. I no longer wore worn-out shoes or carried greasy restaurant trays. But every Wednesday night at 8:00 PM, I still walked into the conservatory of the West Side estate.

Tonight, the chessboard was waiting, but the pieces were pushed aside to make room for a pair of matching silver coffee mugs.

Salvatore sat watching the courtyard rain beat against the massive glass dome. When I walked in, he didn't wait for me to take my seat. He stood up, walked over, and stopped just inches away.

My chest tightened. I reached up, placing my palms against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart.

“And now?” I signed back, looking straight into his dark, scarred eyes.

A slow, brilliant smile broke across his face—the kind of smile no crime boss, no federal agent, and no rival syndicate had ever seen.

Now, his fingers spelled out with deliberate precision, they only want to hold yours.
