Chapter 4 - The Ripple Effect

By sunrise, the chess pieces were scattered, and I had learned more about Salvatore Marquetti’s dark, tangled empire than any federal prosecutor had managed in a decade. He wasn't just a mob boss; he was a relic of an older underworld, operating on a strict code of honor that modern criminals had long since abandoned. Drug trafficking? Strictly forbidden on his turf. Human exploitation? Punished with swift, merciless finality. His power was absolute, but it was anchored by a rigid moral geometry that fascinated and terrified me in equal measure.
Around 8:00 AM, my phone buzzed violently on the table.
It was a text from Brett. Then another. Then five missed calls.
Tessa, please. Where are you? The police are here. The restaurant is being audited by the IRS, the health department shut us down at dawn, and two men in suits just bought out our corporate lease. Please call me. Whatever you want, we can fix this!
I stared at the screen, a cold, vindictive thrill washing over me. I slid the phone across the table to Salvatore.
He glanced down at the screen, read the messages, and let out a low, gravelly chuckle that rumbled in his chest. He picked up his phone, tapped out a brief message, and slid it back to me.
Do you want to see them squirm, or should we finish destroying them legally?
“Legally?” I raised an eyebrow.
My legal team has spent the last six hours buying the commercial mortgage of that restaurant, Salvatore signed, his eyes gleaming with dark amusement. By noon, it’s being converted into a parking lot for the deaf community center.
Before I could process the sheer, breathtaking scale of his retaliation, the heavy oak doors of the conservatory burst open. Marcus strode in, looking uncharacteristically urgent.
“Boss,” Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave. “We have a breach. The North Side syndicate just made a move. They hit the shipping docks on 22nd Street.”
Salvatore’s entire demeanor shifted in a fraction of a second. The relaxed, contemplative host vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless apex predator of the Chicago underworld. His eyes turned to steel.

He stood up, buttoned his jacket, and looked down at me.
Stay here, his hands commanded with absolute, terrifying authority. You are safe in this house. But things are about to get very loud.
