Chapter 4: “HE BLEW UP THE BRIDGE...” — The Bikers Thought They Were Trapped Until a Dying Stranger Revealed the Secret Richard Whitmore Had Buried for Twenty Years

Flames swallowed the bridge.

Chunks of concrete rained into the river below.

Thick black smoke rolled across the highway like a storm cloud.

Ryder slammed his motorcycle sideways, shielding Emily and little Mira behind him.

Tank barely stopped in time.

Viper's front tire skidded within inches of the burning wreckage.

Behind them...

The three black SUVs slowed.

They didn't stop.

They formed a wall across the road.

Doors opened.

Armed men stepped out one by one.

Rifles.

Body armor.

Earpieces.

This wasn't a street gang.

This was a private army.

Emily's face turned pale.

"They found us..."

Mira buried her face against her mother's shoulder.

"Mommy... are we going to die?"

Emily couldn't answer.

She simply hugged her daughter tighter.

Ryder looked left.

Steep riverbank.

Right.

Dense woods.

Forward.

Fire.

Behind.

Gunmen.

For the first time in years...

Even Ryder couldn't see a way out.

The leader of the armed men stepped forward.

He held a loudspeaker.

"Mr. Collins."

His voice echoed across the highway.

"Leave the laptop."

"Walk away."

"No one else has to die."

Tank laughed bitterly.

"Funny."

"You brought twelve rifles for a peaceful conversation?"

The man ignored him.

"Richard Whitmore is willing to pay each of you one million dollars."

Mason stared.

Tank rolled his eyes.

Viper spat onto the pavement.

Ryder didn't blink.

The man continued.

"One million today."

"Another million after you hand over the woman."

Emily gasped.

Mira started crying again.

Ryder slowly removed his gloves.

Then he spoke.

"I've buried friends who were worth more than your boss."

"So tell Richard..."

"...he can't afford us."

The gunman sighed.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

He raised his hand.

Every rifle lifted.

Emily closed her eyes.

This was the end.

Suddenly—

SCREEEEEECH!

An old pickup truck burst out of the trees from a narrow dirt road.

It slammed sideways between the bikers and the gunmen.

The driver's door flew open.

An elderly man jumped out waving both arms.

"GET DOWN!"

Before anyone could react—

BOOM!

The pickup exploded.

The blast knocked everyone to the ground.

Smoke and dirt filled the air.

The gunmen scattered for cover.

Ryder pulled Emily and Mira behind a concrete barrier.

Tank tackled Mason just before bullets ripped through the air again.

The old man stumbled toward them, bleeding heavily from his shoulder.

"Hurry..."

"I don't have much time..."

Ryder caught him before he collapsed.

"Who are you?"

The old man looked at Emily.

Tears filled his eyes.

"You have your father's eyes..."

Emily frowned.

"My father?"

The stranger nodded weakly.

"My name..."

"...Samuel Brooks."

Emily suddenly froze.

"No..."

"It can't be."

Twenty-five years earlier...

Samuel Brooks had disappeared without a trace.

He had been the lead accountant at Whitmore Development.

Police believed he had stolen company money before fleeing the state.

Richard Whitmore had personally testified against him.

Samuel grabbed Ryder's vest.

"I never stole anything."

"I found everything."

"What do you mean?"

Samuel coughed blood.

"I found twenty years of fraud."

"Richard framed me."

"He murdered three business partners."

"He bribed judges."

"He bought politicians."

"He destroyed families."

Emily whispered,

"My father worked with you..."

Samuel nodded.

"He was the only honest lawyer Richard couldn't buy."

Ryder's eyes widened.

"My father?"

Emily asked.

Samuel looked at her sadly.

"Your father wasn't killed by cancer."

Emily stopped breathing.

"What?"

"He was poisoned."

The world seemed to stand still.

Emily shook her head.

"No..."

"My father died when I was twelve."

Samuel reached inside his torn jacket.

With trembling hands, he pulled out a small metal key attached to an old brass tag.

BOX 317

"Union Trust Bank."

Samuel pressed it into Ryder's hand.

"Safety deposit box."

"Everything Richard couldn't find..."

"...is inside."

"What kind of evidence?"

"The original contracts."

"The payoff ledgers."

"The recordings."

"The murder payments."

Tank stared in disbelief.

"You've been hiding this for twenty years?"

Samuel nodded.

"I was waiting..."

"...for someone who couldn't be bought."

He looked at Mira.

Then smiled.

"Looks like I finally found them."

Suddenly—

CRACK!

A sniper's bullet tore through Samuel's chest.

Emily screamed.

Ryder caught the old man as he fell backward.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Samuel struggled to breathe.

His final words were barely audible.

"Don't..."

"...trust..."

Before he could finish—

His head fell limp.

Samuel Brooks was dead.

Silence.

Then a slow clap echoed from the smoke.

Richard Whitmore stepped forward wearing a charcoal-gray suit.

No fear.

No panic.

Just a calm smile.

He looked at Samuel's body with complete indifference.

"What a loyal old fool."

Emily's entire body shook with rage.

"You murdered him!"

Richard sighed.

"I've spent twenty years cleaning up other people's mistakes."

His eyes settled on Mira.

"And now..."

"...one little girl is making this much harder than it needs to be."

He snapped his fingers.

One of the gunmen stepped forward...

Holding a small pink bicycle.

Mira gasped.

"My bike!"

Richard smiled warmly.

"I brought your bicycle back."

He looked like a generous man returning a lost toy.

But Ryder noticed something horrifying.

The white basket had been replaced.

The screws were new.

The paint didn't match.

Someone had hidden something inside it.

Richard wasn't returning the bike...

He was desperately trying to get it back.

Ryder looked at the bicycle.

Then at the terrified little girl.

Then at Richard.

And in that instant...

He realized the truth.

The evidence Richard feared most...

Had never been on Daniel's flash drive.

It had been hidden inside Mira's little pink bicycle...

May you like

The bicycle she had tried to sell for a loaf of bread.
