CHAPTER 2 The Confidential File Opened... And the Millionaire's Mother Collapsed to Her Knees Before the Daughter-in-Law She Had Spent Years Destroying

The room became so quiet that everyone could hear paper turning.

Dr. Harris removed the first document.

Donation authorization.

Emergency consent.

Surgical approval.

Every signature matched.

Then...

He read the donor's name aloud.

"Eleanor Grace Vance."

Margaret frowned.

Arthur blinked.

"What?"

Dr. Harris continued.

"Blood type matched."

"Compatible tissue profile."

"Partial liver donation."

"Bone marrow."

"Kidney compatibility."

Arthur laughed nervously.

"This has to be some mistake."

Dr. Harris looked directly into his eyes.

"There was no anonymous donor."

"Your wife donated part of her liver..."

"...to save your mother's life."

Margaret's knees instantly gave out.

She collapsed beside Eleanor's hospital bed.

"No..."

"No..."

"That can't be true..."

Dr. Harris handed her every medical report.

Every signature.

Every CT scan.

Every operating room photograph.

Three years earlier...

Margaret had less than twenty-four hours to live.

Hospitals across the country searched desperately for a compatible donor.

None existed.

Except one.

Eleanor.

Arthur remembered that week.

His wife had suddenly disappeared for several days.

She claimed she was visiting her sick aunt.

When she returned...

She walked slowly.

She often held her side.

She could barely lift groceries.

He had accused her of pretending to be ill.

She never defended herself.

Not once.

Margaret burst into tears.

"You..."

"You were recovering from surgery..."

"And I..."

"I called you lazy..."

Eleanor quietly nodded.

"I didn't want you to feel guilty."

Arthur suddenly remembered something else.

Every anniversary...

Eleanor secretly visited the hospital chapel.

She wasn't praying for herself.

She was praying Margaret would stay healthy.

The nurses began crying openly.

One whispered...

"She saved the woman who hated her."

Dr. Harris wasn't finished.

He removed another envelope.

"This one..."

"...is why I came today."

Arthur frowned.

Inside were bank statements.

Wire transfers.

Emails.

Private investigator reports.

Margaret stared in confusion.

Then horror.

Because every document exposed Arthur.

Luxury hotel receipts.

Affairs.

Hidden accounts.

Divorce consultations.

Life insurance increases.

One final document stopped everyone's breathing.

A handwritten contract.

Signed by Arthur.

If Eleanor died unexpectedly...

He would inherit everything.

Margaret slowly looked up at her son.

"Arthur..."

"What have you become?"

Arthur stepped backward.

"It's not what it looks like."

Dr. Harris interrupted.

"It looks exactly like attempted financial murder."

At that exact moment...

One of the nurses quietly pressed the emergency security button beneath the bedside counter.

Down the hallway...

Hospital security began running toward the maternity ward.

Arthur suddenly realized...

For the first time in his perfect life...

May you like

He wasn't the most powerful man in the room anymore.
