Chapter 5 - THE STORM OVER EL MILAGRO

Midnight descended upon the Jalisco countryside with a violent thunderstorm. Rain poured in sheets, whipping against the stained-glass windows of Hacienda El Milagro. Thunder shook the foundations of the ancient stone mansion.

Inside, Valeria was sitting beside Don Alejandro’s bed. The old man’s health had deteriorated rapidly over the past forty-eight hours. The strain of the confrontation and the raw emotion of finding his grandchildren had pushed his fragile heart to its absolute limit.

"Valeria..." Don Alejandro wheezed, his hand grasping hers tightly. "The papers... they are in the safe behind the portrait... You must... you must protect the children..."

"Rest, Don Alejandro," Valeria pleaded, wiping his cold, sweaty forehead with a damp cloth. "The doctor will be here as soon as the storm clears."

Suddenly, the lights throughout the mansion flickered once, twice, and died completely, plunging the house into pitch blackness.

Downstairs, the heavy wooden back doors splintered open with a deafening crash.

Valeria’s heart dropped into her stomach. She heard heavy footsteps echoing up the grand marble staircase, accompanied by the distinct sound of handguns being racked.

"Valeria!" a voice boomed through the dark corridors—a voice that sent chills of horror straight through her soul. It was Mateo. "Come out, my sweet wife! Come welcome your husband home!"

Valeria reacted instantly. She locked Don Alejandro’s bedroom door from the inside, shoved a heavy wooden wardrobe against it, and ran to the adjoining room where her children were sleeping.

"Elena, wake up!" Valeria whispered urgently, shaking her eldest daughter. "Take your brothers and sister into the secret storage closet under the floorboards! Now! Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear!"

Elena’s eyes were wide with terror, but she obeyed without hesitation, guiding Carlos, Paty, and little Paco into the hidden cellar hatch beneath the rug.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The bedroom door rattled violently under heavy kicks.

"Open the door, Valeria!" Mateo screamed from the other side. "You think you can play the rich lady now? You are NOTHING! Everything you have belongs to me!"

The wood began to splinter. Julian’s voice joined his brother's, hysterical and wild. "Break it down! Kill the old man first!"

Valeria looked around frantically. Her eyes landed on an ancient decorative iron fire poker resting by the hearth. She grabbed it with both hands, her pregnant belly aching with sharp, sudden pains. The shock and stress were triggering early labor.

CRACK!

The wardrobe overturned, and the door was kicked wide open.

Mateo stepped into the room, holding a heavy revolver, his clothes soaked from the rain. Behind him stood Julian and three armed thugs.

"Look at you," Mateo sneered, staring at Valeria’s swollen belly. "Still playing the victim. Give me the key to the safe, Valeria, and maybe I’ll let you live long enough to drop that bastard in a ditch."

"He is YOUR child, Mateo!" Valeria screamed, holding the iron poker in front of her. "Your own blood! How can you be so monsterous?!"

"Blood means nothing," Mateo snarled, stepping forward and raising his gun. "Money is everything."

"Then you have neither," a weak, thunderous voice called out from the bed.

Don Alejandro had forced himself up. Standing upright, supporting himself against the headboard, he held a double-barreled hunting shotgun pointed straight at Mateo’s chest.

"Hello, son," Don Alejandro whispered.
