On the day of the sentencing, Christopher finally walked into the nursery where the girls were playing. They looked up, their eyes lighting up.
“Mr. Ashford!” Madison shouted, running over to hug his leg.
Christopher knelt down, his eyes filled with tears.
“I have something to tell you,” he said, his voice thick.
He told them the truth. He told them who he was, why he had been gone, and how he had spent twenty years running from the man he was supposed to be.
He expected them to hate him. He expected them to scream.
Instead, Olivia reached out and touched his face.
“You answered the phone,” she said simply. “That means you came back.”

Christopher broke down. In that moment, he realized that no amount of money could ever equal the sound of his daughters forgiving him for a past he could never undo.
