Chapter 2 - The Trap ClosesDaniel was leaning against the marble kitchen island, swirling a glass of cabernet, while Vanessa was tapping away furiously on her tablet, presumably checking the balance of another one of my mother’s looted accounts.

“Decided to join us, huh?” Daniel smirked, not even looking up. “Thought you’d be upstairs crying over her senility by now. It’s a lot to take in when you realize how much work we’ve put into keeping her alive while you were off playing big-city lawyer.”
“You’re right, Daniel,” I said smoothly, stepping into the center of the kitchen and sliding my hands into my pockets. “It is a lot to take in. Especially the financials.”
Vanessa finally looked up, her narrow eyes narrowing further as she scanned my expression. There was no fear there, no defeat, and certainly no guilt. Just an icy calm that seemed to make the air in the room drop ten degrees.
“What are you talking about?” Vanessa snapped, dropping her tablet onto the counter with a sharp clack.
“I’m talking about the lake cabin you sold last month for four hundred thousand dollars cash,” I said, matching her gaze step for step. “I’m talking about the forged signature on the power of attorney document filed at the county courthouse on March 14th. And most importantly, I’m talking about the systematic physical abuse of a seventy-eight-year-old woman under your care.”
Daniel’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, dangerous scowl that I recognized from our childhood. He slammed his wine glass down, splashing red liquid across the pristine white marble.
“Are you out of your absolute mind?” Daniel hissed, stepping toward me with his chest puffed out, trying to use his height to intimidate me just like he used to do when we were kids. “You walk in here after three years of radio silence, try to play the hero, and throw around wild criminal accusations? Get out of this house before I call the sheriff and have you thrown off the property for trespassing and harassment.”
“Go ahead,” I invited softly, tilting my head. “Call the sheriff. Let’s see whose badge gets here first.”
Before Daniel could reach for his phone, the heavy front door downstairs rattled violently under a massive, coordinated strike. The sound of heavy combat boots hitting the hardwood floor echoed through the house, followed by a booming voice that shook the walls.
“State Police! Executing an emergency protective warrant and felony search and seizure! Clear the rooms!”
Vanessa turned completely white, her hands flying to her mouth. Daniel froze mid-stride, his face draining of all color as heavy footsteps stampeded up the stairs and flooded the hallway.

“What is this?” Daniel roared, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade as three heavily armed state troopers burst into the kitchen, followed by two paramedics and an adult protective services caseworker. “I am an attorney! You can't just barge into—!”
“Shut your mouth, counsel,” the lead trooper commanded, stepping forward and flashing a signed judicial order directly into Daniel’s face. “Daniel and Vanessa Miller, you are being detained pending an immediate criminal investigation into elder abuse, financial exploitation, and unlawful restraint.”
