Chapter 4 - The Price of Treason

My heart stopped. I rushed to the hospital window, looking down at the street fourteen floors below.

A black SUV sat idling at the curb. The door opened, and a man in a police uniform stepped out, looking up toward my floor. He wasn't an officer. Even from this distance, I recognized the posture, the cold, calculating stance. It was Victor's personal head of security, a ruthless mercenary named Stark.

"How are you out?" I demanded, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to remain calm.

"Money opens doors, my dear. But absolute power breaks them down," Victor laughed darkly over the phone. "The federal charges mean nothing when the people holding the keys are on my payroll. I'm leaving the country tonight, Elena. But I'm not leaving empty-handed."

"If you come near my son—"

"I don't want the brat," Victor snapped. "I want the decryption key for the offshore accounts. You changed the passwords when you grabbed the drive. Give me the access codes, or Marcus Vance dies. Check your messages."

My phone pinged. A live video feed showed Marcus strapped to a chair in a dark, concrete room, his face bruised and bloody. A man stood behind him, holding a suppressed pistol to his temple.

"You have thirty minutes to upload the keys to the secure server I just texted you," Victor said, his tone turning ice-cold. "If the upload isn't complete, Marcus dies. And then, I'll pay a little visit to the hospital's power grid. Let's see how long your bastard son survives without his incubator."

The line went dead.

Arthur looked at me, his face pale. "Elena? What is it?"

"They have Marcus," I whispered, the room spinning. "And he's threatening Leo."

The trap had sprung. Victor had anticipated the fraud charges all along. He had allowed me to expose him, using the chaos and the media circus as a distraction to escape police custody with the help of his corrupted high-profile allies.

"We call the FBI," Arthur said, his hands shaking as he reached for his phone.

"No!" I stopped him. "Victor has eyes everywhere. If he sees a single federal agent near that server or this hospital, he’ll kill Marcus instantly."

I looked at my son sleeping peacefully in his glass crib. The fire that had sustained me through the staircase fall turned into something colder, deadlier. Victor thought I was playing a game of corporate chess. He didn't realize I was ready to flip the board.

"Arthur, get the car," I said, wiping a stray tear from my cheek. "I know exactly where Victor is hiding. And I'm going to give him exactly what he deserves."
