Chapter 5 - The Lion's Den

The rain had returned, washing over the abandoned shipping docks on the edge of the city. The skeletal frames of rusted cranes loomed against the stormy night sky like ancient monsters.

I walked into Warehouse 4 alone. The only sound was the dripping of rainwater from the corrugated iron roof and the heavy thud of my own footsteps.

"Victor!" I shouted into the darkness. "I'm here! Let Marcus go!"

A floodlight snapped on, blinding me. I blocked my eyes, squinting into the glare.

In the center of the warehouse, Marcus was tied to a chair, barely conscious. Standing next to him was Victor, dressed in a dark traveling coat, a sleek laptop open on a metal oil drum beside him. Stark stood a few paces away, his hand resting on his holstered weapon.

"Always punctual, Elena," Victor sneered, stepping forward into the light. "Did you bring the decryption keys?"

I held up a small, silver flash drive. "It's all here. Every account, every shell company, every dollar you stole. It’s yours. Just let him go."

Victor gestured to Stark, who walked over and snatched the drive from my hand. He plugged it into the laptop, his fingers flying across the keyboard. After a tense moment, Stark looked up and nodded. "It's genuine. The funds are transferring to the Cayman accounts now."

Victor let out a loud, triumphant laugh. It was the laugh of a man who believed he had beaten the universe. He walked up to me, stopping just inches away, his breath hot against my face.

"You see? In the end, you're still just the weak little girl I married," he whispered, his eyes gleaming with psychotic pride. "You thought a few cameras and a smartwatch could ruin me? I built this city, Elena. I own the judges, I own the police, and now, I own your family’s entire legacy."

He drew a silver pistol from his pocket and aimed it directly at my forehead.

"Thank you for the parting gift. But I can't leave any loose ends."

"I knew you would say that," I said quietly.

Victor frowned, his finger tightening on the trigger. "What?"

"Did you really think I came here to save Marcus?" I asked, my voice completely devoid of fear. I looked past him, straight into the lens of a security camera mounted on the wall above the warehouse door. "I came here to give you a grand finale."

Suddenly, the massive metal doors of the warehouse groaned and began to slide shut, locking automatically with a heavy electronic click.

Victor panicked, turning to Stark. "Open the doors! What is happening?"

Stark typed furiously on the laptop, but the screen suddenly went black, replaced by a single, flashing red skull.

"Sir... the flash drive," Stark stammered, his face turning white. "It wasn't a decryption key. It was a Stuxnet-level wiping virus. It didn't transfer the funds... it just permanently erased every offshore account connected to your name. The money is gone. All of it. It’s deleted from the global banking system."

Victor gasped, his chest heaving as he turned his gun back to me. "You bitch! I'll kill you!"

"Go ahead," I said, taking a step toward the barrel of his gun. "But you might want to look behind you."
