Chapter 3 - THE SECRET OF THE SPREADSHEET

Facebook Hook Title: He thought his disabled brother was defenseless. He didn't know the tech billionaire had built a digital trapdoor. The emergency board meeting of Rain Solutions was held at 8:00 PM on the 42nd floor of the glass tower in Midtown Manhattan.

James Reynolds sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking out over the twelve board members. He had spent the last four hours calling in every favor, promising stock options, and painting a picture of a company on the brink of collapse under a dying leader.

"Look at the stock price," James urged, projecting a chart onto the wall. "Every time Michael is seen in public in that chair, the market panics. The algorithm we use to secure bank data—our core product—requires constant oversight. Michael hasn't updated the master code in six months. He is hoarding the access keys. We are one security breach away from bankruptcy."

"And you think you can run the tech side, James?" asked Arthur Vance, the oldest board member and a loyal friend to Michael’s late father.

"I have hired a team of elite developers from Silicon Valley," James said smoothly. "They are ready to take over the code tomorrow. But we need to activate the 'Incapacity Clause.' We need a majority vote to strip Michael of his voting shares and place them in a blind trust managed by me."

"And what about his daughter?" Arthur asked.

"She is a child," James said coldly. "She will be taken care of financially, of course. But a seven-year-old cannot run a tech empire."

Suddenly, the double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Rosa, the housekeeper, pushed Michael’s wheelchair into the room. Beside him walked David Chen and Lily, who was still carrying her purple backpack.

"You're not on the agenda, Michael," James said, standing up. "This is a closed board meeting."

"I built the table you are sitting at, James," Michael said. His voice was stronger than it had been in months. The adrenaline of the fight had temporarily silenced his tremors. "I don't need an invitation."

"Michael, please," Rebecca said, stepping out from the shadow of the window. She had managed to sneak into the meeting as a guest of James. "Don't embarrass yourself. You can barely sign your name. Let James save the company."

Michael looked at the board members. "Ten years ago, we created Rain Solutions to protect sensitive data. We built a proprietary encryption system called 'Aegis.' James claims I haven't updated the master code. He’s right. I haven't updated it because I redesigned it."

Michael reached into Lily’s purple backpack and pulled out a simple black USB drive.

"This is 'Aegis 2.0,'" Michael said. "It doesn't require a master key. It uses a decentralized biometric protocol. It’s twenty times faster and completely unhackable."

The board members whispered excitedly. Arthur Vance leaned forward. "If this is true, Michael, why haven't you deployed it?"

"Because," Michael said, looking directly at his brother, "someone inside this company has been selling our current security protocols to our biggest competitor, Apex Tech. If I deployed Aegis 2.0, the spy would have stolen it too. I had to wait until they made their move."

James’s face drained of color. "This is paranoia. The illness is affecting his mind! He’s making up corporate espionage to distract from his physical decline!"

"Am I?" Michael asked. He nodded to Lily.

Lily walked over to the main projection screen, unplugged James’s laptop, and plugged in her father’s USB drive. The screen instantly changed from a stock chart to a live data stream.

"On May 14th," Lily said, her voice clear in the high-tech room, "someone used the admin login 'J_REYNOLDS' to download 400 gigabytes of source code. The IP address was... Uncle James's apartment."

"That's a lie!" James roared. "Anyone could have spoofed my IP!"

May you like

"But they couldn't spoof your face, Uncle James," Lily said. She tapped the screen. A crystal-clear security video popped up. It showed James sitting in his office late at night, downloading files onto a red hard drive, laughing with Rebecca who was standing right next to him.

"You forgot that the office cameras are on the Aegis network," Michael said softly. "I don't need to walk to see what you do in my house, James. And I don't need to speak to defend my company. The code speaks for me."
