Chapter 4 - THE FLIGHT RISK

Facebook Hook Title: Caught on camera stealing billions. But the ex-wife had one last toxic card to play. The silence in the boardroom was absolute.

Arthur Vance stood up, his face dark with anger. "James, you are stripped of your title effective immediately. The security team is on their way up. And we will be turning this footage over to the FBI."

James looked around the room. The board members who had been nodding along to his speech minutes ago were now looking away, refusing to make eye contact. He was ruined.

"This is garbage!" James screamed, kicking his chair back. He looked at Rebecca. "We’re leaving."

"Not so fast," David Chen said, standing in front of the door. "The police have already been notified of the intellectual property theft. I suggest you stay right here."

Rebecca, however, did not panic. She looked at Michael, then at Lily. A cold, calculating smile spread across her face.

"You think you won, Michael?" Rebecca whispered, walking slowly toward the wheelchair. "You think you can keep her?"

"The court will deny your custody petition, Rebecca," Michael said. "After today, you'll be lucky if you don't go to federal prison."

"Maybe," Rebecca said. "But while you guys were playing tech genius, my lawyers were busy. Lily was born in Switzerland, Michael. Do you remember? We were living in Geneva for your European launch."

Michael’s heart skipped a beat.

"Under Swiss law," Rebecca continued, her voice dripping with venom, "any child born to a Swiss resident—which I was—is a citizen. And under Swiss custody laws, if there is a dispute and one parent is diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disease, the child must be returned to Swiss soil for evaluation. I filed the emergency petition with the Swiss consulate this morning. They already approved it."

She pulled a document from her designer bag and threw it onto Michael’s lap.

"It's an international custody order," Rebecca smiled. "The NYPD can't touch me. I’m taking my daughter to Switzerland tonight. And you can't fly, Michael. The doctors said the cabin pressure at high altitudes would trigger an acute MS relapse. You’ll never see her again."

"No!" Lily cried, running to her father and wrapping her arms around his neck. "I’m not going with her! Daddy, don't let her take me!"

"Lilypad, hold on," Michael whispered, his hands trembling violently now. The stress was taking its toll. His vision was starting to blur, a classic symptom of a flare-up. He gripped Lily tightly, but his muscles were betraying him. He couldn't stand up to stop them.

"Get your hands off her," James said, grabbing Lily’s arm.

"Let go of my daughter!" Michael screamed, trying to push himself out of the chair, but his legs collapsed underneath him. He fell to the carpeted floor of his own boardroom, his body shaking, helpless.

"Daddy!" Lily screamed as James pulled her toward the emergency exit.

"Call 911!" Arthur Vance shouted, rushing to Michael’s side.

Rebecca grabbed Lily’s purple backpack, ripping it from her hands, and threw it into the trash can. "You won't need this where we're going, brat. Let's go, James. The private jet is waiting at JFK."

They disappeared into the private service elevator before the security team could arrive.

Michael lay on the floor, his vision fading. He could hear Lily’s distant screams echoing down the shaft. He tried to move his fingers, but they felt like lead.

"Michael! Stay with us!" David Chen said, kneeling beside him.

"The... backpack," Michael gasped, his voice barely a whisper. "David... the purple backpack... look inside..."
