Chapter 4 - The Midnight Strategy

The house was finally quiet, but the air was still charged with the residue of the battle. I sat on the couch for a long time, listening to the distant sound of the deputies' car driving down the long, gravel driveway. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the rhythmic hum of the refrigerator and Lily’s soft breathing.

But I couldn't afford to rest. Not yet.

With agonizing slowness, I shifted Lily to my side, using a pillow to prop her up, and reached for my laptop hidden beneath the sofa cushions. The physical pain was a throbbing, constant reminder of my vulnerability, but my mind was sharper than it had been in months. The brain fog of the postpartum weeks had vanished, replaced by a crystalline focus.

I opened the laptop and dialed Arthur Pendelton via an encrypted video link. His face appeared on the screen, his deeply lined face etched with concern but his eyes bright with victory.

"Mara, my dear," Arthur said, his voice a comforting rumble. "Are you alright? Did the deputies arrive in time?"

"They did, Arthur. Daniel and Vanessa are gone," I said, tapping my fingers against the keyboard. "But Daniel’s right about one thing—he’s going to try to burn the house down on his way out. He knows the logistics network. He’s going to try to sabotage the morning shipments from the New Jersey port."

Arthur nodded, putting on his reading glasses. "I’ve already anticipated that. I have the digital security team revoking his administrative access to the global routing server as we speak. But Mara, he still has the physical keycards to the main terminal in Newark. If he goes there tonight..."

"He won't be able to do anything," I interrupted, bringing up a live tracking screen. "I installed a secondary biometric lock on the server room two weeks before I went into labor. He thinks it was a standard security upgrade mandated by the port authority. It requires my thumbprint or yours to override. If he tries to force it, the silent alarm goes straight to the federal port police."

Arthur let out a dry chuckle. "Your father would be incredibly proud of you, Mara. You’ve thought of everything."

"I had to, Arthur. I was protecting my daughter," I said, looking down at Lily, who was fast asleep, oblivious to the war being fought over her cradle. "What about the offshore accounts? Did we trace the final destination of the four hundred thousand?"

Arthur’s face turned serious. "We did. And it’s worse than we thought. Daniel wasn't just planning to run away with Vanessa. He was setting you up to take the fall for the tax evasion. The dummy corporation, V&D Consulting, is registered under your maiden name using a forged power of attorney."

A cold sweat broke out across my forehead. My husband hadn't just betrayed me; he had planned to send me to federal prison while he raised my daughter with his mistress using my money.

"He really thought I was stupid," I whispered, the sheer malice of his plan hitting me like a physical blow.

"He thought you were weak because you were a mother," Arthur said softly. "He forgot that the fiercest creatures on earth are the ones defending their young. Rest now, Mara. The morning brings the board meeting, and you need to be ready to take the crown."

May you like

"I won't rest until he’s behind bars, Arthur," I said, closing the laptop.

I looked at the shattered glass on the floor. Tomorrow, I would hire someone to clean it up. Tomorrow, I would change the locks. But tonight, I had to survive the pain in my body and prepare for the final strike.
