Chapter 5 - The Corporate Coup

At 9:00 AM the next morning, the grand conference room of Vanguard Logistics was filled with tension you could cut with a knife. The board members—mostly older men who had known my father for decades—sat in high-backed leather chairs, whispering furiously among themselves.

At the head of the table sat Daniel’s empty chair.

The heavy double doors swung open. I walked in, wearing a tailored black blazer that carefully concealed the abdominal binders and the swelling of my postpartum body. My movements were slow, deliberate, but my posture was unyielding. I carried Lily in a dark wrap against my chest, her tiny head tucked securely under my chin. Behind me walked Arthur, carrying a thick leather binder full of financial records.

The whispers stopped instantly. Several board members gasped.

"Mara?" George Higgins, the oldest board member, stood up. "What is the meaning of this? And... you brought the baby?"

"The baby is a shareholder, George," I said, taking my seat not at the side of the table, but directly in the center, directly opposite Daniel’s empty throne. "And since her father is currently unavailable due to legal complications, she and I will be representing the Roth-Miller interests today."

Before anyone could protest, the back door of the conference room burst open. Daniel marched in, flanked by a slick, expensive-looking defense attorney. Daniel looked exhausted, his suit crumpled, his eyes bloodshot. He looked like a man who hadn't slept a wink—because he hadn't.

"This meeting is illegal!" Daniel shouted, pointing a finger at me. "Mara has no authority to call an emergency board session! She’s mentally unstable, suffering from postpartum psychosis, and she’s trying to steal my company!"

His attorney stepped forward, preparing to hand out a cease-and-desist order. "Gentlemen, my client is filing an emergency injunction to halt these proceedings—"

"Save your breath, counselor," I said, my voice echoing off the glass walls with absolute authority. "Arthur, please project document Exhibit A."

The large projection screen on the wall flickered to life. Instead of corporate growth charts, it displayed a series of bank statements from the Cayman Islands, followed by a high-resolution scan of the power of attorney document Daniel had forged with my signature.

The board members leaned forward, their faces turning grim.

"What you are looking at," I said, looking directly at Daniel, whose face had gone completely white, "is evidence of systemic corporate embezzlement and identity theft. Over the past six months, Daniel Roth has diverted four hundred thousand dollars of operational capital into a private shell company. Furthermore, he attempted to frame me, the majority shareholder, by forging my signature on the tax documents."

"That’s a lie! You signed those papers!" Daniel yelled, his voice cracking with desperation.

"The signature was dated June 14th, Daniel," I replied calmly. "The exact day and hour I was in the operating room undergoing an emergency C-section. I have the hospital logs, the surgical records, and the testimony of three doctors proving I was under general anesthesia when this document was allegedly signed in your office."

The room went dead silent. Daniel’s attorney slowly lowered his papers, turned to look at his client, and shook his head.

"George," I said, turning to the senior board member. "As the holder of 51% of the preferred shares, I move for an immediate vote to permanently remove Daniel Roth from his position as CEO and terminate his employment for cause, without severance."

George looked at Daniel with pure disgust. "I second the motion."

"All in favor?" I asked.

Every single hand at the table went up. Except Daniel's.

"It’s over, Daniel," I said, adjusting Lily as she stirred. "You can leave through the front door, or I can have the building security escort you out in front of the press who are currently waiting downstairs."
