Chapter 2 - THE WHISPER IN THE WINE CELLAR"You're trespassing in your own thoughts, Dante," Marco muttered, slamming a heavy ledger onto the mahogany desk in the underground study.

The wine cellar had been converted into Dante’s secondary command center—a windowless vault lined with vintage Bordeaux and reinforced steel. It was the only place in the estate completely immune to the howling wind outside. But tonight, the thick stone walls couldn't keep out the paranoia gnawing at Dante's nerves.
Marco, Dante’s fiercely loyal consigliere and head of security, pulled out a leather-bound dossier and slid it across the glass-topped desk.
"I ran the background check you asked for on Elena Vance," Marco said, leaning forward, his eyes dark and sharp. "Or whatever her real name is."
Dante flipped open the folder. Inside were clipped newspaper articles, faded photographs, and a single birth certificate with a red redacted stamp. "And?"
"Nothing," Marco said flatly. "That's the problem. Her social security number was issued three years ago in a sleepy town in Maine that burned to the ground six months later. No dental records, no employment history, no digital footprint prior to that fire. She appeared out of thin air, and somehow, my vetting agency cleared her because her references traced back to a shell corporation tied directly to the Vane empire."
Dante froze. The Vane name was a ghost from his family's past—a rival syndicate dismantled twenty years ago in a bloodbath that left both sides crippled. "The Vanes are extinct," Dante said, though his voice lacked conviction.
"Are they?" Marco tapped a finger against a grainy photograph of a young girl standing outside a courthouse in Boston. "Look closer at her jawline, Dante. Look at the eyes. That isn't just a coincidence. She didn't wander into your estate looking for a job as a nursery maid. She engineered it."
Before Dante could answer, the secure intercom on the desk hissed to life.

Static crackled, followed by a soft, rhythmic tapping sound. Then, a voice floated through the speaker, low and crystal clear:
“Check the wine racks, Mr. Moretti. You keep your secrets deep, but I like to keep mine chilled.”
