Chapter 1 - The Dragon's AwakeningThe sharp, heavy inhale cut through the silence of the subterranean office like a razor.

Dante Vance did not flinch, nor did he jolt awake the way ordinary men do. Decades of surviving turf wars, assassination attempts, and betrayal had forged his reflexes into something lethal and precise. One second his eyes were closed; the next, they snapped open—dark, cold, and entirely lucid.

Yet, for the first time in his terrifying life, the lethal instinct didn't manifest as a blade slicing through the dark or a silenced pistol clearing leather. Instead, his right hand—calloused, stained with the weight of absolute power—merely tightened slightly, instinctively guarding the tiny, warm bundle rising and falling against his chest.

I stood frozen in the doorway, my lungs refusing to draw breath. Behind me, the heavy footsteps of my manager echoed down the stairwell, accompanied by a panicked rasp.

“Lena! Stop right there! You’re dead. Do you hear me? You are completely, irrevocably dead!”

Dante’s gaze shifted past the golden fluff of Ellie’s hair. His eyes locked onto mine. The temperature in the room plummeted by ten degrees.

“Who,” Dante began, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that resonated off the mahogany walls, “invaded my sanctuary?”

“I—I’m so sorry,” I choked out, tears hot and blinding in my eyes, taking a desperate step forward. “Please. She’s just a baby. She’s seven months old. She wandered—well, she didn’t wander, someone took her, or she crawled, or—please, give her back to me. You can do whatever you want to me, fire me, blacklist me, throw me in the river, but please, don't hurt my baby!”

My manager stumbled into the doorway, took one look at Dante Vance sitting up with a baby on his chest, and turned an alarming shade of pale grey. He dropped to his knees so hard the floor shook.

“Mr. Vance! I swear on my life, I didn't know! This pathetic excuse for an employee smuggled her in, I told her to stay away—Mr. Vance, please—”

“Shut up,” Dante whispered.

It wasn't a shout. It was a single, devastating command. The manager clamped his mouth shut so fast his teeth clicked, pressing his forehead against the cold concrete floor.

Dante slowly shifted his weight. He didn't drop Ellie; he cradled her with an unsettling, practiced ease, sliding his arm beneath her tiny frame as he sat upright on the leather couch. Ellie stirred, letting out a soft, sleepy whimper, her little hand reaching out to grab the lapel of Dante’s custom-tailored, thousand-dollar Armani suit.

She tugged on the fabric.

My heart stopped completely. People in this city vanished for looking at Dante Vance the wrong way. If she made him angry—

Instead, Dante looked down. A muscle twitched in his iron jaw. Slowly, meticulously, he reached out with one finger and let Ellie wrap her tiny, milk-sticky fingers around it.

“She was crying,” Dante said, his eyes flicking back up to meet mine. The piercing scrutiny in his gaze felt like a physical examination of my soul. “In the hallway. Hiding behind the linen cart. Your manager’s men were going to throw her out into the alley like garbage. So, I brought her in here to shut her up.”

“You... you saved her?” I whispered, trembling from head to toe.

“I protect what is in my house,” Dante replied smoothly, sliding his legs off the couch and standing to his full, intimidating height. Even with Ellie in his arms, he towered over the room. “And as for you, Lena... you broke the cardinal rule. You brought an infant into a war zone.”

He took a step toward me. My manager whimpered on the floor, waiting for the executioner's axe to fall.

“Take her,” Dante said, stopping inches away from me. He extended Ellie toward my shaking arms.

As I scooped my daughter back against my chest, burying my face in her sweet-smelling curls, Dante whispered something into the cool air that made my blood run cold.

“Come back down here after your shift ends, Lena. We need to discuss the penalty for trespassing. And trust me... you cannot afford to say no.”
