Chapter 9 - The Final StandThe gunshot echoed like thunder inside the tiny apartment.

I didn't feel pain.
I opened my eyes slowly. The armed guard standing beside Julian wasn't standing anymore. He was collapsing backward onto the linoleum floor, a smoking hole drilled clean between his eyes.
Standing behind him in the doorway, weapon still smoking and blowing a wisp of grey gunpowder into the air, was the scarred enforcer from the helipad, flanked by a dozen heavily armed elite operatives who had quietly breached the back windows.
“Clear!” the enforcer barked.
Julian’s face went from smug confidence to absolute, panicked terror in a millisecond. He leaped out of the armchair, abandoning his weapon, and snatched Ellie up by her waist, holding her tiny body like a human shield in front of him with a lethal switchblade pressed against her soft, vulnerable throat.
“Stay back!” Julian screamed, spittle flying from his lips, his eyes wild and bloodshot. “One more step and I swear to God I’ll slice her throat from ear to ear! Drop your weapons! All of you, drop them now!”
I stopped breathing. My knees buckled. I would have hit the floor if Dante hadn't instantly caught me with one arm while keeping his rifle locked firmly on Julian’s chest.
“Julian,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a tone so terrifyingly calm, so utterly devoid of human emotion, that even the tactical guards took a step back. “If you leave a single scratch on that child’s skin... I won't just kill you. I will dismantle every corporation, burn every stash house, salt every earth you ever touched, and feed your remains to the stray dogs in the alley.”
Julian’s hand trembled. The blade slipped an eighth of an inch closer to Ellie’s skin. A tiny bead of crimson blood welled up on her collarbone.
At the sight of that single drop of blood, something inside Dante snapped.
He didn't hesitate. He didn't negotiate.
With blinding, inhuman speed, Dante lowered his assault rifle and drew a throwing dagger from his tactical boot—a weapon I had never even noticed him carrying.
SWOOSH.
The silver blade cut through the air like a streak of lightning.
Before Julian could even register the motion, the dagger buried itself hilt-deep directly into Julian’s right wrist.
A blood-curdling scream tore from Julian’s throat. His hand flew open in agony, dropping the switchblade clattering to the floor.
In the exact same microsecond, Dante surged forward across the room like an unleashed predator, slamming Julian against the wall with enough force to crack the plaster. With his free hand, Dante snatched Ellie out of Julian’s failing grip, cradling her securely against his chest with fierce, unshakable tenderness.
Julian slid down the wall, clutching his bleeding wrist, gasping for air as Dante’s elite guards swarmed him, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
Dante didn't even look down at his brother. He turned around slowly, walking over to where I was kneeling on the floor, shaking uncontrollably.
He knelt down in front of me, his dark eyes filled with a depth of emotion I had never seen before—fear, relief, and unconditional devotion.
He gently extended Ellie toward me.

She wasn't even crying. She let out a happy little gurgle, reaching out her tiny hands to grab my hair just like she always did.
I snatched her into my arms, burying my face in her neck, sobbing tears of pure, overwhelming relief as Dante wrapped both of us in his strong, protective embrace.
