Chapter 9 - The Betrayal WithinMarcus gasped for air as Vincent loosened his grip just enough to keep him from passing out, pinning him against the damp concrete wall.

“It wasn't just a coincidence, Vincent,” Marcus wheezed, his eyes wide with terror. “Derek didn't just happen to walk into that café. Someone sold her location. Someone inside your own inner circle.”

Vincent’s expression didn't change, but the air in the bunker grew colder. “Name names.”

“Julian,” Marcus choked out, spitting a drop of blood onto the floor. “Your chief of security, Julian. He’s been taking envelopes from my lieutenants for six months. He gave Derek the schedule. He knew Norah liked to walk near Fourth and Elm on Tuesday mornings.”

Leo stepped forward from the doorway, his massive jaw tightening so hard a muscle popped. “Julian? That son of a bitch grew up with us. He stood at my brother’s funeral.”

“Greed doesn't care about old friendships, Leo,” Vincent said coldly, finally releasing Marcus and letting the older boss slump to the floor like a broken doll.

Vincent wiped his hands with a pristine white handkerchief from his breast pocket, tossing the cloth onto Marcus’s lap with absolute disdain.

“Marcus,” Vincent said, turning his back on the trembling mob boss.

“V-Vincent?” Marcus whimpered from the floor.

“Your syndicate is dissolved. Your assets belong to me as of midnight. If I ever see your face in this city again, I won't send my men. I’ll come myself.” Vincent didn't look back as he walked toward the exit. “Leo. Take care of our friend Marcus. And make sure Julian is waiting for us in the penthouse living room when we get back.”

“Consider it done, Boss,” Leo grinned grimly, racking the slide of his shotgun.
