Chapter 8 - The Twist Beneath the Floorboards

Three months passed like a ticking clock of absolute peace.
The Starks estate had returned to its fortress-like tranquility. Susan, Marcus, and Grant were rotting behind bars, swallowed by the federal prison system with no hope of parole. The shipping empire was thriving under the watchful eyes of Rory and his new Chief of Operations, Maeve.
Lily and Rose had completely recovered, their nights filled with quiet slumber and childhood dreams instead of phantom screams.
It was a crisp Tuesday evening when the renovation crew finally arrived to strip out the old flooring of the master nursery. Rory had ordered the entire room gutted down to the raw concrete joists, wanting to erase every physical remnant of the nightmare that had nearly broken his family.
Maeve stood in the center of the stripped room, holding a blueprint of the original 1920s architecture of the mansion.
The flooring contractors hauled away the last rotted sections of oak floorboards near the eastern corner of the room, exposing a dark, forgotten crawlspace beneath the foundation.
“Mr. Starks,” the lead contractor called out, his voice echoing in the hollow room. “You’re going to want to see this.”
Rory walked over, stepping past piles of discarded drywall and sawdust. He crouched down beside the open gap in the floorboards, shining a heavy tactical flashlight into the dark recess beneath the house.
The beam of light cut through the dust, illuminating something that made his blood run instantly cold.
Tucked deep into the corner of the concrete foundation, connected to a thick, heavy-duty underground cable that ran straight out toward the perimeter fence, sat an old, industrial-grade mainframe computer system.
It wasn't a modern device. It was a bulky, military-spec relay station, covered in a thick layer of dust, with a flashing red LED light that had been blinking rhythmically for over a decade.
Rory stared at it, a cold shiver running down his spine.
The teddy bear transmitter hadn't been a recent invention crafted by Susan or Marcus. It had simply been plugged into a pre-existing, hardwired sonic frequency grid built directly into the foundation of the house long before Rory ever bought the estate.
Maeve knelt beside him, her eyes widening as she read the serial numbers stamped onto the metal casing of the mainframe.
“Mr. Starks,” Maeve whispered, her voice dropping to a breathless gasp. “This isn't a domestic surveillance unit. This is a cold-war era psychological warfare grid.”
Rory slowly stood up, his mind racing as a terrifying, earth-shattering realization hit him with the force of a freight train.
Susan, Marcus, and Grant hadn't built the trap. They hadn't invented the torture. They had merely discovered it, hijacked it, and used it against his daughters.
Someone else had built this house.
Before Rory could even process the horrifying implications, the heavy mainframe computer beneath the floor suddenly whirred to life. The flashing red LED light shifted to a solid, piercing green.

And from the internal speaker of the old military console, a synthesized, distorted electronic voice crackled through the silent nursery, speaking words that made Rory’s heart stop completely:
“Welcome home, Rory. We’ve been waiting for the new generation.”
