Chapter 5 - The Scorpion’s NestThe shotgun barrel pressed hard against the base of Vincent’s skull, forcing the massive security chief to freeze mid-stride. The suppressed pistol trembled slightly in his grip.

"Lorenzo," Vincent hissed, his voice dripping with venom as he recognized the voice behind him. "I thought you were hitting the north-side warehouses."

A lean, sharp-faced man stepped into the faint light of Room 412. Lorenzo Russo wore an immaculate charcoal suit completely untouched by the desert dust, holding a Remington tactical shotgun with the practiced ease of a man who had survived half a dozen turf wars in the Arizona desert. Behind him stood three armed enforcers, their faces covered in black balaclavas.

"You really thought I’d fall for your little setup, Vince?" Lorenzo chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "You text my phone at 2:30 a.m. saying Dominic is dead and I need to mobilize the troops to 'secure the assets'? Please. I’ve known you since we were running contraband across the Nogales border. You leak when you lie."

Dominic shifted slightly on the iron cot, wincing as his chest tube hissed. He kept his hand firmly hidden beneath the pillow, his pale blue eyes darting between his treacherous right-hand man and his ambitious cousin.

"So," Dominic rasped, breaking the tense silence. "You both came to my funeral. How touching."

Lorenzo didn't lower his shotgun, but he flicked a glance toward the bed, a smirk playing on his lips. "Save it, cousin. You look like hell. If I knew a few hollow-points would make you this cooperative, I would’ve hired better hitmen years ago."

"Kill him, Lorenzo!" Vincent suddenly roared, lunging backward in an attempt to knock the shotgun away.

Chaos erupted in the cramped, dusty room.

Lorenzo’s enforcers swarmed forward, tackling Vincent to the concrete floor in a tangle of limbs and grunting curses. Dr. Hale screamed, curling into a tight ball beneath the sink.

Cara pressed herself flat against the peeling wallpaper, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She watched in horror as Vincent managed to pull a backup knife from his boot, slicing deep into the arm of one of the enforcers before a heavy rifle butt slammed into the side of his head, knocking him cold.

The room fell back into a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the ragged breathing of the wounded enforcer and the hissing of the oxygen tank.

Lorenzo stepped over Vincent’s unconscious body, walking slowly toward the iron cot. He stood over Dominic, looking down at his bleeding cousin with a mixture of familial contempt and morbid fascination.

"Well, Dominic," Lorenzo said softly, resting the barrel of the shotgun against his shoulder. "The board is clear. Vincent is out. The police are looking for a ghost. And you’re sitting on a cot in a condemned hospital ward with a bullet in your chest. What happens now?"

Dominic slowly pulled his hand out from beneath the pillow.

In his palm wasn't just the nickel-plated Glock. It was a small, encrypted flash drive—the digital ledger containing every bank account, offshore shell company, and federal bribe that kept both the Russo syndicate and half of Maricopa County’s elite afloat.

"Now, cousin," Dominic smiled, blood staining his teeth crimson. "We make a deal."
