Chapter 4 - The Sound of ThunderDownstairs in the grand dining room, Vanessa Russo was reviewing the wedding seating charts with the head planner, looking entirely self-satisfied.

The double doors of the study upstairs suddenly opened.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed down the grand staircase.
They weren't the cautious, measured steps of a man who couldn't hear his own movement. They were the thunderous, commanding strides of an apex predator who had just woken up from a three-year slumber.
Vanessa looked up, annoyed by the interruption.
Dominic stood at the bottom of the stairs. His dark eyes were burning with a terrifying, absolute fury. In his right hand, he held the amber bottle and the brass button.
Grant Bell materialized from the hallway instantly, locking eyes with Dominic. Without a single word spoken, Grant saw the look on his boss’s face and immediately rested his hand on his holster, blocking the exit doors.
“Dominic?” Vanessa asked, her voice tight with sudden, unexplainable panic as she stood up from her chair. “What is it? Why are you looking at me like that?”
Dominic walked slowly toward her, stopping just two feet away. He didn't sign. He didn't write on a whiteboard.
Instead, for the first time in three years, his deep, resonant voice broke through the silence of Kane Estate like rolling thunder.
“Call Dr. Hale back,” Dominic said, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. “And tell him his appointment has been cancelled permanently.”

From the top of the stairs, little Lily peered down, clutching Captain the rabbit in her arms, and smiled.
