Chapter 5 - THE AMBUSH AT THE GALA

The grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Art Museum was illuminated by massive crystal chandeliers. Tonight was the annual Benefactors Gala—the most exclusive charity event of the year.

Arthur Vance walked through the double doors, looking regal in a bespoke charcoal tuxedo. Beside him, Clara looked breathtaking. She wore an elegant midnight-blue silk gown that draped gracefully around her frame, accessorized only with a delicate sapphire necklace that Arthur had gifted her that morning. She moved with quiet confidence, no longer the timid girl who had been brought to tears at her sister’s wedding.

As the couple moved through the room, high-ranking executives and diplomats approached them, offering warm greetings and eager handshakes.

“You look stunning tonight, Clara,” Arthur whispered into her ear, leaning down to kiss her cheek.

“I owe it to my personal stylist,” Clara teased softly, looking up at him. “He has good taste.”

Suddenly, the ambient chatter of the ballroom died down. A commotion was brewing near the main entrance.

A tall, broad-shouldered man with slicked-back hair and a sharp double-breasted suit entered the room. Beside him, wearing a loud, bright red dress that clashed violently with the gala’s dress code, was Vanessa.

Clara gasped softly, stepping back. “Vanessa?”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. He placed his hand reassuringly on Clara’s waist. “Stay close to me.”

The man walking beside Vanessa was none other than Dominic Kane—Arthur’s fiercest corporate rival.

Dominic strolled purposefully toward Arthur and Clara, holding a champagne flute in one hand and keeping Vanessa on his arm like a trophy. The crowd parted around them, sensing the incoming confrontation.

“Arthur,” Dominic greeted, his voice echoing with mocking pleasure. “It’s been too long.”

“Dominic,” Arthur replied coldly, his posture rigid. “I see you’re letting just anyone be your plus-one these days.”

Vanessa flared up, stepping forward. “Watch your mouth, Arthur! You think you can destroy my life and get away with it? Mr. Kane knows everything about your shadow operations!”

Dominic raised a hand, silencing Vanessa with a dismissive gesture. “Patience, Vanessa. Let the adults speak.”

Dominic turned his gaze to Clara, assessing her from head to toe. “So this is the famous Clara. The secret wife. Arthur, you kept her hidden for a reason, didn't you? You didn't want anyone looking too closely into her past... or her family.”

“If you have a point to make, Dominic, make it,” Arthur said softly, his voice dangerously low. “Before I have security throw you out on the street.”

Dominic laughed loudly. “Throw me out? Oh, I don't think so, Arthur. Because ten minutes ago, my team filed a major lawsuit against Vance Global in federal court. A fraud and asset concealment suit.”

The crowd gasped. Reporters who were covering the gala began snapping pictures frantically, camera flashes strobing across the velvet curtains.

“On what grounds?” Arthur asked, unbothered.

“On the grounds that your entire fortune—and the acquisition of Vanguard Tech eight years ago—was funded through offshore illegal trusts registered in Clara’s maiden name!” Dominic announced loudly, pointing at Clara.

The room erupted into shocked murmurs.

Vanessa smirked, her eyes gleaming with absolute triumph. She leaned over toward Clara and whispered loudly enough for nearby guests to hear: “Did you really think he married you for love, Clara? You were just his tax haven! He married you to hide his dirty money under your name!”

Clara felt her blood run cold. She looked up at Arthur, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. “Arthur... what is he talking about?”

Arthur didn't answer right away. His face remained completely unreadable under the flashing cameras.

Dominic pulled a folded document from his coat pocket and tossed it onto a nearby tray. “The evidence is right there. Clara’s signature is on the founding documents of the offshore entities that drained my father’s company. Arthur didn't save you from your family, Clara... he used you to cover his crimes!”

Vanessa laughed out loud, a sound full of vindictive joy. “Look at her! The billionaire’s wife is going to prison!”

The room spun around Clara. All eyes were on her. The whispers, the flashing lights, the cold accusation—it was a nightmare far worse than the wedding.

She turned to look at Arthur. “Arthur... please tell me this isn't true.”

Arthur slowly turned his head to look at Clara. His calm eyes met hers, but for the first time since she had known him, he looked deeply pained.

“Clara...” Arthur began softly. “I was going to tell you tonight...”
