Chapter 1 - The Ghost from the Past

"Sarah," James whispered, his voice trembling as he finally spoke the name that made the hospital hallway spin. "It’s Maya."

I stopped breathing. Maya. The name alone felt like a physical blow, dragging up a wreckage I thought we had buried forever. Maya was my younger sister—or rather, the sister we had disowned, the girl who had burned every bridge, shattered every family boundary, and vanished into the shadows of addiction and toxic choices six years ago.

"Maya?" I echoed, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. "What does Maya have to do with this? Where is she?"

James didn’t answer immediately. He reached out, his calloused hand gripping my shoulder to steady me. "She’s inside. In the recovery room. She... she didn't want anyone else, Sarah. The hospital called emergency contacts, and my number was the only one still active in her old phone records that she memorized. When I got the call, I didn't know what to think either."

My mind raced through a labyrinth of pure panic and rising fury. Maya had always been a hurricane, leaving destruction in her wake, but this? A baby? How could she have carried a child to term while living the reckless, unstable life she led? More importantly, why was James acting so paralyzed, so terrified to look me in the eye?

"If Maya is inside," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper, "then why did you look like a guilty man when I asked if the baby was yours?"

James flinched. He pulled me closer to the waiting room window, away from the nurses' station. "Because of what she told me before they wheeled her into surgery, Sarah. She didn't just drop a baby into this hospital. She dropped a ticking time bomb right into our laps."

He paused, swallowing hard, his eyes glassy with unspeakable dread.

"She named the father on the birth registry, Sarah. And it’s not some random stranger from the streets. It’s someone tied directly to our family. Someone who has been sitting at our dinner table for the last three years."
