Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence

The dining room chandelier hummed, a low, vibrating chord that seemed to amplify the crushing pressure in the air. Rocco Moretti’s fingers curled around the edge of the polished mahogany table until his knuckles turned the color of bone. He did not yell. In the underworld, a raised voice meant you had lost control; absolute silence meant someone was about to die.

"You knew the hospital," Rocco repeated, his voice dropping into a register so cold it scraped against the marble walls.

Valentina’s breath hitched, though she recovered faster than most would have. Her eyes, usually as impenetrable as polished glass, flickered toward the doorway where two of Rocco’s heavy-set guards stood blocking the exit. She adjusted the silk belt of her robe with fingers that barely trembled.

"Rocco, listen to yourself," Valentina urged, stepping closer while keeping a careful distance from the baby. "You are listening to the hallucinations of a terrified maid's child and suspecting your own wife because of a plastic scrap from a public maternity ward? St. Helena delivers hundreds of children a week. Anyone could have picked that up."

"It wasn't picked up," Sophia whispered, her small frame standing resolutely between the newborn and the wealth of the room. "It was fastened. Too tight. It left a red mark on his skin when I unwrapped him."

Elena rushed forward, her hands hovering helplessly over her daughter’s shoulders. "Sophia, please, hush. You’ve done enough. Mr. Moretti, she’s just a child, she doesn't understand—"

"Quiet, Elena," Rocco commanded without looking away from his wife.

He stepped toward Valentina. Every inch of his forty-eight years—the scars, the wars won, the dynasties built on blood and calculated cruelty—converged in his stride. He stopped a foot away from her. He towered over her, but Valentina raised her chin, meeting his dark gaze with a terrifying brand of defiance.

"Look at the number on the back, Valentina," Rocco whispered, holding up the tiny plastic band. "It’s not a standard maternity ID. It’s an internal registry code. My registry code. The one assigned exclusively to heirs born under the Moretti protection wing at St. Helena, bypassing public databases entirely. Only three people alive have the clearance to generate this specific code: me, my deceased brother, and the director of the hospital—who happens to be your uncle."

The color drained completely from Valentina’s face, leaving her looking like a marble statue carved from grief and panic.

"I don't know anything about that code," she whispered, her voice finally losing its practiced melodic pitch.

"Find out who was on duty in the private wing tonight," Rocco told his consigliere, Marco, who had already drawn his phone. "And tear apart every security feed from the east gate to the kitchen corridor. If a ghost walked into my house and dropped my flesh and blood in a garbage bin, I want to know whose skin they were wearing."
