Chapter 7 - The Final GambitTwo weeks later, the corporate headquarters of the Vance Group—now officially renamed Vanguard Global Holdings—was a hive of federal investigators and forensic accountants.

Clara sat at the massive CEO desk, reviewing the final restructuring audits. The transition of power was complete. The corrupt board members had been ousted, and the company’s massive financial reserves were being redirected toward public infrastructure funds and restitution for families harmed by the Vance family's decades of predatory business practices.
Julian walked into the office carrying two cups of hot coffee, setting one gently beside her computer.
“The SEC just approved the final asset reallocation,” Julian said, sitting down in the guest chair opposite her. “We’re officially debt-free, clean, and completely independent of my mother’s old network.”
Clara took a sip of the coffee, letting out a long breath she felt like she’d been holding for three years.
“And Eleanor?” Clara asked.
“Her trial starts next month,” Julian replied, his expression somber. “Her defense attorneys have all dropped her because her retainers bounced from frozen accounts. She’s facing forty years minimum on federal racketeering and conspiracy charges.”
Suddenly, the secure intercom on Clara’s desk buzzed loudly.
“Mrs. Vance?” the head of private security called out through the speaker. “We have an unexpected visitor at the main security checkpoint. It’s Dominic’s former co-counsel, Marcus Vance—your husband’s cousin. He’s claiming he has vital evidence regarding the last hidden trust fund, and he wants to negotiate immunity directly with you.”
Julian frowned, shaking his head. “Marcus? He was always just a low-level paper-pusher. He wouldn't dare show his face here unless—”
“Unless he’s trying to save his own skin by selling out whatever scraps are left,” Clara finished, her forensic instincts instantly tingling with suspicion.
“Let him up,” Clara ordered into the intercom. “Bring him straight to the boardroom under armed escort.”
Ten minutes later, Marcus Vance was pushed into the sleek glass boardroom by two security guards. He looked panicked, sweat beading on his forehead as he clutched a battered leather briefcase to his chest like a life jacket.
“Clara! Julian!” Marcus blurted out, stumbling toward the conference table. “You have to listen to me! I didn’t know anything about Eleanor’s plan to take the baby! That was all her and Dominic!”
Julian crossed his arms, staring at his cousin with pure disgust. “Spare us the theater, Marcus. What do you want?”
Marcus slammed the leather briefcase onto the table and popped the latches. Inside sat a single, heavy mechanical hard drive and a handwritten ledger.
“This,” Marcus whispered, breathless, “is the master key to Eleanor’s ultimate insurance policy. A secret trust fund hidden in the Panama registry containing five hundred million dollars. If you give me immunity from federal prosecution, it’s all yours.”
Clara stood up slowly, walking around the table until she stood right in front of Marcus. She didn't look at the briefcase. Instead, she stared directly into Marcus’s shifty, terrified eyes.
“Marcus,” Clara said, her voice chillingly calm. “Do you know what my favorite part of forensic accounting is?”
Marcus swallowed hard. “W-What?”
“It’s not finding the money,” Clara replied, leaning in close. “It’s finding the tripwires hidden inside the accounting logs.”

Marcus’s face drained of color.
“You didn’t come here to trade the master key for immunity,” Clara continued, her voice rising with absolute certainty. “You came here because that hard drive isn’t a vault key... it’s a localized tracking beacon and a proximity explosive trigger.”
