Chapter 3 - THE GOLDEN CAGE

The Sokolov estate was not a house; it was a fortress.

Perched on the wealthy cliffs of Lake Forest, surrounded by ten-foot stone walls topped with razor wire and high-definition security cameras, the mansion looked like a gothic palace forged from iron and black marble.

When the tinted doors of the SUV opened, Sophie stepped out into a world she had only ever seen in movies. Dozens of armed guards patrolled the manicured grounds. Dobermans barked in the distance.

A butler clad in a pristine tuxedo bowed deeply as she entered the grand foyer. "Welcome, Miss Larsen. Mr. Sokolov is awaiting you in the primary wing."

Sophie was led up a sweeping marble staircase and down a long gallery lined with oil paintings of stern-faced ancestors. At the end of the hallway, a heavy oak door swung open to reveal a massive bedroom painted in soft blues and golds.

In the center of a giant king-sized bed sat Kolya. He was wrapped in a cashmere blanket, refusing a tray of silver-covered dishes held by a terrified-looking young maid.

The second Kolya’s gray eyes locked onto Sophie, his little face lit up. "Sophie!"

He threw off the blanket and raced across the polished wood floor, burying his head directly into her waist. Sophie’s defensive walls instantly crumbled. She dropped to her knees and hugged him tightly, breathing in the scent of baby powder and expensive soap.

"I told them I only wanted your food," Kolya mumbled into her shoulder. "The chef here makes everything taste like paper."

Sophie laughed—a breathless, genuine sound that seemed to shatter the cold air of the room. "Is that so? You're turning into a food critic now?"

From the doorway, a shadow crossed the light. Viktor stood leaning against the frame, his arms crossed over his chest, watching the scene with an unreadable expression.

"He hasn't smiled like that in three years," Viktor remarked quietly.

Sophie stood up, keeping one hand protective on Kolya’s shoulder. "He’s a child, Mr. Sokolov. He needs warmth, not guards with machine guns outside his bedroom door."

"Warmth does not stop a bullet, Miss Larsen," Viktor replied coldly, walking into the room. He motioned to the maid, who quickly bowed and scurried out, closing the door behind her.

Viktor stepped up to Sophie, looking down at her with intense scrutiny. "You survived Marcus. You survived poverty. You survived the loss of your family. You are a fighter, Sophie. That is why I brought you here."

"You brought me here because I was a liability," Sophie countered.

"No," Viktor leaned in, his voice dropping to a dangerous hush. "I brought you here because my enemies think you are my weakness. And I intend to make them pay for that mistake."

He reached into his coat and pulled out a thick dossier, tossing it onto the bed. Photos spilled out—pictures of Sophie walking her dog, Sophie working at the diner, Sophie entering her apartment.

"The O'Malley family has been planning a takeover of my Chicago operations for six months," Viktor explained, his eyes darkening. "They used your ex-husband to trace Kolya. But what they don't know... is that I let them."

Sophie blinked, stunned. "You... you used your own son as bait?"

"I used myself as bait," Viktor snapped, a flicker of genuine rage surfacing. "Kolya’s nanny was an O'Malley mole. She intentionally let him loose in the storm. I intercepted her before she could deliver him to them, but Kolya ran faster than my men anticipated. He stumbled into your diner by sheer accident."

Sophie gasped. "So yesterday... it was a setup?"

"It was a bloodbath that almost claimed my son's life," Viktor said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "And now, the O'Malleys believe they have forced my hand. They are holding a summit tonight at the Blackwood Hotel. They expect me to surrender my shipping docks in exchange for peace."

He took a step closer to Sophie, grabbing her hand gently. His touch was warm, solid, and surprisingly reverent.

"I need a woman by my side tonight," Viktor murmured, his eyes locking onto hers. "A woman who looks like she holds my heart. If they think you are my wife... they will make their move against you. And when they do, my men will eliminate them all."

May you like

Sophie yanked her hand back, horrified. "You want me to be a living target?!"

"I want you to be the queen on my chessboard," Viktor corrected softly. "Help me destroy them, Sophie. Do this... and I will give you five million dollars, a new identity anywhere in the world, and freedom from your past forever."
