Chapter 8 - THE FINAL TWIST (THE SHOCKING ENDING)

Six months later.

The sun shone brightly over the newly renovated Birchwood Diner.

The cracked tiles were gone, replaced by beautiful dark marble floorboards. The rusty neon sign had been replaced with polished copper lettering that read: LARSEN & SOKOLOV RESTAURANT.

Sophie stood behind the counter, wearing a stylish apron, pouring coffee for regular neighborhood customers. Kolya sat at the corner booth, happily doing his homework, while two discretely dressed security guards kept watch outside the glass front windows.

The front door opened, and Viktor walked in, looking sharp in an open-collar linen suit. He walked up to the counter, leaning over to kiss Sophie deeply on the lips.

"How was the board meeting?" Sophie asked with a smile.

"Boring," Viktor smirked, reaching out to steal a piece of bacon off a plate. "They miss the days when I used to threaten to throw them out the window."

"Don't you dare ruin my customer service reputation," Sophie laughed, slapping his hand away playfully.

Life was perfect. The O'Malleys were gone. Moscow was silent. The diner was thriving, and for the first time in her life, Sophie felt truly loved, wealthy, and safe.

Then, a quiet chime echoed from Sophie’s apron pocket.

It was the encrypted black phone Viktor had given her on the very first night. The phone that only Viktor and his chief of security had the number to.

Sophie frowned, pulling it out. A text message appeared on the screen from an untraceable, unknown number.

Attached was a single high-definition video file.

Sophie tapped the screen. The video began to play quietly.

It was taken inside a dark, luxurious penthouse three years ago. In the video, a beautiful woman with dark hair lay in a medical bed—Elena Sokolov, Viktor's late wife.

Sitting beside her was a younger man holding a glass of scotch.

Sophie’s heart stopped. The man in the video was Marcus—her ex-husband.

In the video, Marcus leaned in close to Elena and whispered, "The poison worked. Viktor thinks it's cancer. The council in Moscow paid me well, Elena. Soon, your husband will lose everything."

Then, Elena sat up in bed, completely healthy, a wicked smile spreading across her face.

"Good," Elena’s voice whispered in the video recording. "My husband thinks I'm dead. He thinks Kolya is his son. He has no idea... that Kolya belongs to you, Marcus."

Sophie dropped the phone onto the marble counter, the glass shattering.

Her breath trapped in her throat. She looked across the diner at Kolya, who was smiling, his dark hair falling over his forehead, his gray eyes shining in the sunlight.

Then she looked at Viktor, who was happily pouring himself a cup of coffee, completely oblivious to the horror unfold on the counter.

Sophie slowly turned the phone over and read the final text message that popped up underneath the video:

"Thank you for taking care of my son, Sophie. Tell Viktor... the dead wife is coming home to claim her king."

THE END.
