Chapter 4 - THE DANCE OF THE VIPERS

The grand ballroom of the Blackwood Hotel was a sea of velvet, crystal chandeliers, and dangerous power. Chicago's elite—politicians, judges, syndicate bosses, and dirty billionaires—milled about holding glasses of champagne, blissfully ignoring the men with concealed weapons stationed at every emergency exit.
The heavy double doors swept open, and the entire room fell dead silent.
Viktor Sokolov entered, looking terrifyingly handsome in a custom midnight-blue tuxedo. But it wasn't Viktor that caught everyone's breath.
It was the woman on his arm.
Sophie looked unrecognizable. Her messy diner ponytail had been styled into an elegant, intricate updo. She wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown that hugged her curves and accentuated her strike-bright hazel eyes. Around her neck sat a platinum necklace studded with black diamonds—a Sokolov heirloom worth more than her entire diner.
She walked with her head held high, though inside, her pulse was racing at a thousand miles an hour.
"Smile, moyal," Viktor whispered in her ear, his hand firm and steady against the small of her back. "They are watching us like vultures."
"If I throw up on your expensive shoes, don't blame me," Sophie muttered back through a dazzling, fake smile.
"You look stunning," Viktor said, and for the first time, his voice carried a raw sincerity that made her breath hitch. "Hold on to me."
A man in a sharp gray suit with a jagged scar running across his jaw approached them, flanked by two towering bodyguards.
Liam O'Malley. Head of the O'Malley syndicate.
"Viktor," Liam sneered, lifting his glass. "I was beginning to think you'd lost your nerve. And who is this breathtaking creature? I thought you were still mourning poor, dead Elena."
Viktor’s body instantly went rigid as iron. The air around them dropped by twenty degrees. "Careful, Liam. Your tongue has always been faster than your brain."
Liam’s eyes slid over to Sophie, a predatory glint dancing in his gaze. "Miss Larsen, isn't it? The little diner girl from Irving Park Road. Amazing how fast a street rat can be dressed up like royalty."
Sophie didn't flinch. She had spent years dealing with drunken drifters, violent exes, and ruthless landlords. She stepped forward, looking Liam dead in the eye.
"A street rat knows how to spot garbage, Mr. O'Malley," Sophie said sweetly, her voice echoing clearly enough for nearby guests to hear. "And right now, I'm looking right at it."
A few quiet gasps rippled through the surrounding crowd.
Liam’s smile vanished, replaced by an ugly, lethal scowl. "You bold little bitch..."
"Touch her, and your hand will never attach to your arm again," Viktor warned, his voice low, quiet, and absolutely terrifying.
Liam chuckled bitterly, stepping back. "Enjoy the party, Sokolov. It's the last one you'll ever attend." He turned and faded into the crowd.
Sophie leaned closer to Viktor, her heart pounding against her ribs. "He’s going to move tonight, isn't he?"
"Yes," Viktor whispered, his gray eyes tracking Liam’s movements across the room. "He thinks he has poisoned my drinks. He thinks my guards have been bought off. He believes this is the night the Sokolov empire falls."
"And is it?" Sophie asked nervously.
Viktor turned to her, reaching up to gently trace her jawline with his thumb. "I told you, Sophie... I don't lose. Now, when the lights go out, stay close to me. No matter what you hear."
Before Sophie could ask what he meant, a loud crack echoed through the ballroom, followed by the shattering of the massive central chandelier.
The entire ballroom plunged into total darkness.
Panicked screams tore through the air. Gunshots rang out in rapid succession—flashes of orange light illuminating terrifying snapshots of chaos.
Sophie felt a pair of strong arms wrap around her waist, pulling her behind a heavy stone pillar.
"Viktor!" she cried out over the deafening noise.
May you like
"I have you," his voice breathed against her ear.
Suddenly, a red laser sight painted itself across Sophie’s chest.
